I cannot guarantee this will work, though, as I got comfortable with double tapping to shift through 18 gears (starting at 3/1L or 5/2L, depending on the situation). Good luck!
Nevermind, I just tried it and it does not work - I cannot even assign a key or button to Shifter Toggle, let alone check the Shifter Toggles use Switch Mode box. Nevertheless, I'll let this as it is, maybe you find it a point to begin with.
Switch Mode is *not* for use with momentary-action pushbuttons like on keyboards and game-pads. It's for, surprising enough, bi-stable switches (toggle/rocker etc). Unless, you like to be holding your button(s) down the whole time you want a mode to be active, of course.
