did they come in a .zip folder?
If so, just drop that in the mod folder. Don't unpack them unless they are .rar or .7zip

Not necessarily, it can easily be a .zip file and still require unpacking. The only way to be sure really is to look inside it. If you see directories like '/def'; '/sound'; '/vehicle'; '/material'; '/ui'; '/automat'; '/map' etc, then you know it's a mod. If you see more .zip or .scs files etc then you know it needs to be unpacked.

if it's a pack of files in a ,zip then I'd delete it. It will either be a pirate copy or someone who doesn't know what they're doing. the ,zip format is the most unreliable way to pack your files, with the lowest compression ratio.

You do know that an .scs file is just a renamed zip.....right?

Some advice, create a folder in your documents folder for downloading ATS or ETS2 mods, the way I do mine is Trucks, Trailers, A.I. mods, Map mods, etc, etc, that way you can examine the download and see if it needs to be unpacked as a zip file or not. As MyMazingATS said a scs file is nothing more than a renamed uncompressed zip file. I personally always unpack zip files to a seperate folder and repack them into scs files.

Only the sound files in a mod archive is required to be stored uncompressed, the game will handle all other files compressed or not, regardless of the extension.
