Short vs Long 6x4
From what I can tell, the only difference between the short and long versions of the 6x4 are the gas tank and the drop in Manuverability. Now I get that means harder to turn and park, but is there any other gameplay differences?

For example, on my last trip with a Short 6x4, I almost got stuck on an entrance ramp and it looked like the back 4 wheels were going to come off the road due to the incline and weight of the trailer. Would the long 6x4 prevent/worsen that because of the longer wheelbase?

Sorry if this was asked/answered, I tried searching but didn't see anything and I am not an expert on this subject.

Thanks!

I seem to recall, short chassis also cannot have sleeper cab.

Doesn't change gameplay one bit, though.

Nothing else but gas tank, manuverability, and sleeper cab change.

Ok, so sounds like if you're ok with a smaller gas tank short is the way to go for the manuverability. Thanks!

The Freightliner Liner FLB found here on the Workshop has a very short wheel base with sleeper too . Fun to drive and very good in tight places and turns . A lot of people not into the cab overs but they do have an advantage over the long nose beauties like Viper's Peterbilt 389 .
Just don't ride as nice and not as classy but get the job done !

I love the cabovers. Too bad they never have mileage starting at 0 or id drive one all the time.

I used to build the long frames a lot but with some of these long heavy cargo trailers and a few of the really tight depots I've been leaning more toward the standard 6x4's. Not sure about the SCS 389 but on Vipers 389 (not updated yet) when using the 72" sleeper there is even an option for a 6x4 short chassis.

The only real gameplay differences are:
  • The long chassis carry more fuel, have higher steering radius and weigh 20,345 lbs without fuel.
  • The short chassis carry less fuel, have lower steering radius and weigh 18,160 lbs without fuel.

I know this is a few years old, but it seems that there is 1 more major difference between 6x4 short and 6x4 long chassis that effect actual game play. The max load the truck can effectively haul.

I have the Kenworth W900 with the best engine and transmission. With the short chassis, it's great with lighter loads. But when I took a 123,000 Lbs load, even on a flat stretch, it took forever getting through the 50 and 60 MPH range. Oddly, turning on cruise control and then increasing the speed up the 5 mph increments a few times instead of me holding down the accelerator myself made this faster, although it still took some time. Finishing the haul and then changing to a long chassis, I got a 100,000 Lbs load. There was no issue. Granted there is a 23,000 Lbs difference but it "seems" as if the short chassis is lacking with heavier loads.

There is nothing in the game files that does what you are suggesting above; chassis length has 0 impact on performance.

True - the game lets you sleep in any rest area even without a sleeper cab. Shame there is not distinction in game, even if only a different coloured rest-area icon for those attached to a motel or similar where a trucker could get a room for the night.

The only thing that is different between the two and might have an impact on performance are the kerb_weight values.

short:
kerb_weight[]: 4645 # 10220lb
kerb_weight[]: 1805 # 3970lb
kerb_weight[]: 1805 # 3970lb

long:
kerb_weight[]: 5202 # 11445lb
kerb_weight[]: 2027 # 4460lb
kerb_weight[]: 2027 # 4460lb

So you have more overall weight with the long one but also more traction.

This video might be of interest. He plays around with the chassis files and checks what influence it has.

I like long hauls and I find the the longer wheelbase wanders less than the short wheelbase. This could be important if you like to text while you drive.
