You will need to assign a button for the "splitter." On an 18 speed each gear can be split in half per say.
With an 18 speed you have 8 Main forward gears and 2 Low gears. But the interesting part about most eaton 18 speeds is they are really "22-24 speeds" if you count reverse. You have the normal Low+Highrange crudely pictured above. Each main forward gear has a "half gear" split, turning the 8 forward gears into 16 gears+2 low=18. Both Low gears can be split to give you the "20" But if you count the reverse gear you have low range reverse+The split=22. Most (I can't comfirm that all have) also have High Range reverse+the split=24.
Just some boring knowledge for the people just learning about 18 speeds. Disclaimer: All of the above has been tested by me in the real world, cannot guarantee it works like this in game

The low gear is only on the low range. It can be slit on an 18 speed however, into Low Low and Low High.
On the upper range you do not have a "Hi Low" (that would be weird. Low Low Low, Low Low Hi, High Low Low and High Low High xD)
So you effecively have on 18 speed 4 reverse (LRL, LRH, HRL and HRH), and 18 forward (10 on Low range -LL, LH, 1L, 1H, 2L, 2H, 3L, 3H, 4L, 4H and 8 on high range - 5L, 5H, 6L, 6H, 7L, 7H, 8L, 8H)
13 speed just dont have the gear split on the low range, and 10 speed have no split, but have an extra speed on the high range, where the low is, (note its note considered a low, but 1 on a 10 speed, and 5 on upper range)
