Usually whenever that happens to me it fixes it. Otherwise i just restart the game.
Trucks also vary on shifting based on load and engine power...
^ I would say this is the most likely candidate for your problem. You need to manually change the shifter layout in the 'options-->controls' menu anytime you're using a different transmission. It's right down near the bottom of the controls page.
If the truck you're currently driving has a ten speed gearbox, you need to set the 'Shifter-layout' option to a matching layout from the drop-down box. If the truck doesn't have a ten speed and you're using the ten speed layout, then what you're seeing would be consistent with that situation.
Check the diagnostics page to see the installed transmission of the currently driven truck.
