If you have a webcam, you could perhaps give View Tracker a try:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/929270/ViewTracker/

There's a Demo of it you could try first.
After adjusting the Smoothing and other options you might find it gives good results.
It seems to work good with American Truck Simulator.

TrackIR or similar works really good for this game. And then for better immersion, you don't need to run the F2 mirrors.

I have TrackIR with the reflective hatclip. I'd say camera needs to be within 0.5 to 1m of you. Further than that it sometimes plays up. If you get the one with IR LED clip it'll probably work ok at 1.5m. There's no reason camera has to be where your screen is, but works best if its in the line from your head to where top of your screen is, even if you hang it from the ceiling or on some sort of bracket. It can also work at bottom of screen.

I'm running a 50" TV, I have the camera at about 0.75m sitting below the screen, and my screen is at head height.

I've seen a DIY kit ages ago using an accelerometer module, so you could be at any distance, but only has 3dof, rather than 6.

Also have a look at FaceTrackNoIR another face tracking software that uses your camera. I've used it for ATS and it works but prefer using it for my flight sim. It's around $5.00 or so to register. Looks pretty much the same as ViewTracker

I just discovered this ViewTracker thing and while it works pretty decent at the default settings, I'd like to be able to tweak it a bit.
Does anyone use this for ATS and if so, do you have any recommendations for optimal settings for ATS?

It's a matter of experimenting to see what seems to work best for your computer, webcam and your personal preference.

For the settings though I'd suggest to have 30 FPS (if your webcam supports it).
Also perhaps try a camera-size resolution of 640x480 (you could try larger or smaller, but I found that size for my webcam, which is a Logitech C920, seems to be good for responsiveness).
All of the various smoothing options I have at around 90%.

Have decent lighting in your room so that the webcam can see your face clearly.
Depending on your Webcam and what software utility for it, you could also try adjusting some settings with that as well. For example; the software utility for my Logitech C920 webcam, in the Advanced Settings option I ensure to have the "Right Light" option NOT checked, as in this way the camera responsiveness is much better and smoother (if I check that option, then it makes it a bit 'choppy / laggy'). For Anti-flicker option I have set to NTSC - 60Hz.

Save the settings and give it a try with ATS.

Good luck.
