Rear steerable axle
I saw on the 53 foot trailers they have an option for a steerable rear axle. Does this actually make a difference when turning and backing up?

I haven't tried the 53ft trailer with the rear steeable axle yet, but my experience from ETS2 (standard trailers with steer axle(s) ) is, that it makes a big difference especially when backing up. Give it a try! And happy trucking! :longhaul:

In general the end of a 53 ft trailer will be off set some 8 ft from the steer axle. Meaning if your straight and do a 90 degree turn. The rear axle would make a path in the snow for instance 8 ft different than the steer axle made. Same thing in reverse.

A rear steering axle when doing the same, would have some 2 ft difference. Making it far easier to make corner's.

The issue is when backing. Because the trailer's rear axle turn immediatel when the trailer starts to move in reverse. Compensating from the norm for the none 8 ft reaction one is use to, is a ♥♥♥♥♥.

Hence the reason in the day's of old, we utilized by hand a two inch pin. Thus "IF" the trailer and the rear axle were perfect in line. Inserted the pin. Usually took a couple of attempts at getting the two in line. Today, it's done with hydraulics's, most generally air. Get it close to straight, flip a switch and when the pin is inserted all the way. A light comes on, so you know the pin is engaged.

Just as there are those who actually can back up a set of double's, today as well as yesterday; There were those, (I wasn't one) who could back up a wagon with rear steer axle's.
