Retarder (mechanical engineering) - Wikipedia
Actually, in game, if you have a retarder installed and you're doing.. say a wot contract and cruise control is set to 65. If you continue to accelerate at this speed, whilst travelling downhill, it's possible to gain an extra few mph. If you let of the gas, the retarder will respond until the truck decelerates to 65, regardless of having been set.
For now, I'm assuming SCS didn't record an engine sound quite right or some anomalous other sound was introduced to the recording.
No mods, clean install. I did get a ton of DLC when I bought it, all the states, special transport, heavy cargo, forest machinery, and wheel tuning and steering creations. I've pretty much only been hauling loads of 45000lb+ and most 80000lb+. I don't know if either of those is relevant.
Also, I do hear that whistling sound when on cruise control on downslopes. I only hear the clattering when on a level or slight uphill grade and the engine is doing a bit of work but still at 55, 1220-1300rpm, A17.
The simple automatic only switches up to 17th gear when driving at 55mph.
Thanks for the confirmation (finally) (lol). I've been driving the Volvo VNL 300 because of the short wheelbase, but my second choice was a Peterbilt duty cab and I think I'll try swapping to that instead. Shouldn't be too much longer.
I guess it couldn't hurt, but I don't really see them going to the trouble of changing the engine sounds for the VNL unless it was a LOT of people complaining about it. I've never even done a bug report myself (for any game), so I'm not quite sure what is involved. I guess I just wanted to let you know (after all this time) that there was one more person who could identify with what you were experiencing. It's kind of like this droning warble that gets quite tiring after a while, and It doesn't really make for enjoyable long hauls (lol).
