Best skills for new players?
What are the best skills to get more money and exp early on?

Finish Long Distance.

From there it's really up to you. Fuel economy is only worth touching if you DON'T use realistic fuel economy in the settings. If you have it turned on then the Fuel economy skill is worthless (the game ignores it) so it's only worth putting points in there if you don't actually have the main setting enabled.

I go for fragile and high value over long distance.
Reason being, why go for longer hauls when I can make more money on the jobs I'm already hauling.
I'll then increase long distance to match.

Long Distance is good for two or three ticks.

What's more important are skills not to take right away: the specific ones like Explosives, etc., and Fuel Efficiency.

One in each first, except the Fuel Economy. They'll open up more well-paying jobs.

I say this.
3 distance
1 High value
1 Fragile
2 distance
2 Just in time
All ACDR
This is just my 2 cents.

Fuel is a useless skill, that makes a slight reduction in your fuel costs, which when you are earning $100k per job is irrelevant.
If you are running with a hard economy, then it may be useful, but if your are running a hard economy you should also be using realistic fuel consumption which disables the fuel economy skill.

Well now, I did say, to me I think fuel economy is very good .. to each their own :)) I would put 2 pts in LD, HV, F and JIT before venturing into fuel ..again .. to ME i think tis great! Sure you can make more space bucks with other quals, but I can travel the lands without stopping for fuel, not to mention at the begining, can't say how many times I took a job and had to start off by getting fuel :))

I know that enabling 'realistic fuel consumption' means the game uses the "engine_volume" attribute in engine files to determine fuel consumption - or at least plays a part in calcs..
But does this mean that when 'realistic fuel consumption' is disabled, the engine_volume attribute is ignored?

As far as I know it's either using the skill system or the realistic on toggle. Never both. But you might wanna ask Max that.

TBH I think they should drop the eco skill in favour of skills related to the special cargo (the escort ones) and have realistic fuel as default.
