W900 vs 389
Which truck is better in terms of engine power and can you haul heavy loads with the 389?

Me myself I like the 389 and yes it will haul heavy loads that is what I drive in the game pete 389

I drive the 389 with a realistic physics mod and I have a heavy trailer mod and they are extremely heavy and I enjoy the truck slowing down on the hills, especially now the beta has added more hills in the game. Also makes the truck much harder to stop so you need to reduce speed well before you need to stop or you blow right through an intersection and that is with my foot hard down on the brake. Love it!

Power doesn't bother me as I have an engine sound mod and use the Cummins 444 which if I remember correctly is 550 HP. That is a great engine and sound.

Edit: corrected typos.

True I heard that the 18 speed is better suited for heavy loads, but wasn't sure it actually worked I don't use the 6 speed allison for heavy loads,

I use the 18 speed, lots of gear changes but works great on the hills.

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't they share the same engines?

W900 has a 625 hp engine, has more torque. Any of the trucks can haul heavy loads. The 389 isn't bad at all, I drove it for a while. It'll handle anything you can throw at it! Edit: Forgot to mention the 389 tops out with a 550 hp engine and corrected typos.

Both trucks could do it. Don't expect a little 325hp to pull 100,000lbs easily lol. It's just personal preference. The W900 does has the 625hp engine but really 550 can do the same thing. Oh and it might not matter, but, if you're using automatic or manual transmission.

Might not hurt to test the 389 again since SCS fixed the torque curve in a beta update earlier today.

Cummins N14 is way better than the 444.

The w900 has the ronger engines and the frame is heavier I think.

I like the N14 too and until recently that was the only engine I would use. However, since finding out about the 444 from one of the real life truckers here and hearing it's nostalgic sound, I have preferred it to the N14. I like the sounds of both but there is just something about the 444 which I find better.

I like both, the 389 is abit smaller, but on first release it has issues that was fixed today, the throttle was responding in a weird way, like it had a weird torque curve or something, but now its real good, might be the best right now.

As for power, honestly, none of the trucks feel all that powerful in ATS, I dont know why, in ETS2 I always used engines below 500 hp, and was fine, loved them, here, I just have to get the 550 or 625 to really be happy, I tried the 455 engine and it does the job but feel really weak.

In ETS2 I'd drive a DAF 435, Scania 440 or 420, Volvo 460, never feeling like I'm lacking power.
Even if I use the 18 speed in ATS it doesnt feel that powerful. And ETS2 only offer 12 speed gearboxes.

Its really hard to tell if they really are slower and weaker, such different conditions, and imagine these American beasts are quite heavy since they are alot bigger, wich might explain why the load on the trailers are abit lower then the European counterparts. Talking normal loads here, not special permits.

Damn, all this talk makes me wanna drive some more, gonna do that! :D

Not sure I can pick a winner, they are both great, the interior in the 389 seem more fitting, with the old school design of it all, the W900 has a weird mix of new and old. The 389 does too but its not as obvious.

The 389 is basically the 379 except that the hood is longer and the headlights are more modern. The 379 was as powerful as the w900 bcak then, in terms of engine power. The w900 has a heavier and longer body frame. It has been in production since 1961.

It might be that the gear ratios are made for a higher top end than the Euro trucks since Euro trucks are restricted to 55mph/90kph by law, where as in the US trucks aren't governed and can be expected to run highway speeds of 80mph in some places. The higher top end gear ratios would most likely cause lower acceleration in return.
