The Retarder reduce key is the ' (apostrophe) key, not the . (period) key. :)

Make sure it is setup in the game settings...

When you use the cruise control, the retarder should automatically engage to limit your speed when you gain speed downhill and disengage otherwise. But how much you might gain depends upon a setting somewhere about tolerance of the speed control I think. The default might be 5 mph, but in ATS mine is set for 0, so speed never goes over speed control setting when it is engaged (unless you step on the throttle).

When I got into ETS2 I thought the retarder was not working because I would gain speed going downhill with speed control engaged. But it was probably set on default 5 km/h tolerance, so it would sometimes gain 5-6 km/h above speed control setting before coming back to 5 km/h or less over speed control setting.

Otherwise if not using cruise control, I have +/- buttons on my wheel set to adjust retarder, so I can use the retarder when going down steep hills without cruise. But then need to minimize it (tapping "-") when finished doing that. I have not paid attention to that in ATS, but in ETS2 if I manually increase the retarder, it turns off the speed control.

It will tell you to push whatever key you have mapped for the function. Default key for retarder reduce is ' (apostrophe). Did you change it? Many people see the Route Advisor message and mistake the ' for . all the time. :)

Or go to key bindings and map the retarder to something VERY obvious (for research purposes), like "X" or "Left Shift".

Really depends on keyboard used as well. By default for me "Ø" increase and "Æ" decrease retarder :) Probably the same keys as you mention. The two right of "L".

I think the two keys being mentioned, on a US keyboard, are to the right of "M".

Nope, to the right of L are ; and ' keys, for retarder up and down.

OP - I am so glad you posted this. I, too, was having issues using the retarder. Then after reading the post here. I turned mine back on automatic and change the cc and smart cc to 0 tolerance. That really improved the gameplay for me. thank you all whom posted answers to this post. I am learning a whole lot in this forum.
