When I got into ETS2 I thought the retarder was not working because I would gain speed going downhill with speed control engaged. But it was probably set on default 5 km/h tolerance, so it would sometimes gain 5-6 km/h above speed control setting before coming back to 5 km/h or less over speed control setting.
Otherwise if not using cruise control, I have +/- buttons on my wheel set to adjust retarder, so I can use the retarder when going down steep hills without cruise. But then need to minimize it (tapping "-") when finished doing that. I have not paid attention to that in ATS, but in ETS2 if I manually increase the retarder, it turns off the speed control.
It will tell you to push whatever key you have mapped for the function. Default key for retarder reduce is ' (apostrophe). Did you change it? Many people see the Route Advisor message and mistake the ' for . all the time. :)
Nope, to the right of L are ; and ' keys, for retarder up and down.
