A little PSA...
In real life, to haul LCVs (doubles, triples, rmd, etc.) you do NOT need an oversized load banner or beacons. I just keep seeing this in screenshots and it is really annoying me.

that is true you dont need them but since havy haul dlc was introduced into the game its a new feature and people like using the new stuff and just because you see screenshots of them with that stuff in it doesnt mean they r using them for that reason they have it on their trucks and just dont wanna take them off so to each their own man no reason to annoy you its just other peoples preferences to how they play the game hence the reason its called a video game and not real life

My point is, people are trying to be realistic (realism series on youtube, etc.) and using them. It's all fine and well to have them, but you don't put on your beacons unless the load is over the dimensions of the trailer. In most places it's illegal to use them otherwise. People who are playing unrealistically, fine.

The problem is that you just can't get out and add or remove that banner between loads. You have to go to a garage and pay to change it. People don't want to do that every load, so they just leave it there.

Some cities don't have a garage so you couldn't even if you wanted too. This really should be something you purchase to be able to take oversize loads and press a button to apply/remove it. I can't imagine it'd be that hard for them to do, it's like flipping lights on and off.

Ideally, the oversize banner and flags should just appear on your truck when you take an oversize load at the job selection screen.

Exactly, it should work similar to the beacons. Once you purchase it just hit a button to furl or unfurl it.

I like that idea. I have the DLC, but I don't put the banner on my trucks because the majority of my loads are normal trailers. I do have beacons on most of my trucks because they can be switched on & off.

Definitely worth leaving a suggestion for this on the SCS forum.

Maybe they should keep a spare truck for switching between normal loads and heavy loads. Engine and transmission for heavy loads is not necessarily going to be optimum for hauling normal loads. I am using 600 hp 18-spd on my current truck and normally find myself double or triple clicking shifting in lower gears (paddle shifters) even near 80,000 lb GVWR. But it is nice for getting optimum gear on hills and a bit taller high gear overall than 13-spd for speed/economy.

I haven't gotten the heavy cargo DLC yet because I just started getting established with (2) 5 truck garages, a 3 truck garage, and starter garage that I reassigned a different driver to. But for that you do not need tall speed gearing, you need something geared down to get moving.

I did see a real truck with oversize banner and flags. Did not get a real good look at the truck model, but it had windows on sides of sleeper, and looked like a T680 in red similar to one I have. I don't know how heavy the load was, but several pieces of framework were wider than the trailer.

Under what conditions or type of load do you need to use beacons on the cab?

I like to use one truck so I've set up a W900 with a 6x4 chassis, the smallest cat motor, and an 18 speed. It's about as balanced as I can make it for all types of loads according to the little chart.

And besides if you keep a spare truck just for oversize loads, you can't pick up a job you find with it anyway because if you switch to that truck, A. you'll be back at whatever city your garage is in, and B. Time will have passed and the job will probably be gone.

As far as conditions for what qualifies as an oversize load, a good rule of thumb, if the load is wider than a lane, or needs a permit for weight exemption to move it, it's oversize. Not true for everything, but a generalization.

If the load is wider than 8'6" or load plus trailer is taller than 13'6", you need the banner and lights. Not sure what the regulations are regarding length or weight when it comes to banners/lights, or what dimensions require a pilot vehicle, as I pull a reefer RL and don't have to deal with those regs.

An obvious sign that it's wide enough for oversized markings is that it's wider than the *trailer*, as most trailers are right at the 8'6" width limit. Lanes are usually 10' wide.

Weight...interstates and US highways, 80,000lbs gross. State highways vary.

Funny, I was thinking about this thread myself yesterday and how it needs to be changable with a button press.

This is why I leave the banner off my truck all the time, even though I'm pretty much exclusive to the heavy loads. Bobtailing with an oversize load banner? But Officer, I swear I'm pulling a load of the Emperors new clothes! (And I don't think there is a banner available for my bull bar.)

If you're ONLY doing oversized loads, then usually you can leave the banner on. (Turn the lights off, though.) Oversized loads are only allowed to move during daylight hours, and they'll often drop the trailer somewhere and bobtail to a hotel room. Not sure if the daylight restriction is *all* oversized loads or just the ones that require permits/pilot vehicle, though. They're also restricted to a pre-planned route that's arranged when they get their permit (which permits are on a per-state basis. They can sometimes get held up at a state line for days waiting on a permit for the state they're entering.)

Kind of off topic but it would be nice to be able to remove the banner at will if you're not hauling a heavy load. Kind of weird hauling say a tanker of gas and you've got the banner on. Or those tiny trailers of packaging.

Exactly, that's why it needs to be a switch like turning on the beacons to furl/unfurl it once you buy it.

I still say the oversize banner and flags should just be automatically applied to your truck when you take an oversize job from the job market, could even make it a check box in the options menu if you really hate the flags or have a mod truck it doesn't work with.
