My payment of $19.90 US cleared through paypal about two hours after I purchased the mod. I recieved an email with a link to the download about four hours after that. If I recall correctly the download was about 214MB and was a 7zip file format.
Once the download was complete, I extracted the file and the folder contained three .scs files part 1, 2, and 3. It's also worth noting that this truck supports the cabin accessories dlc mod for ATS, which I also have installed.
Okay, to the point.
I loaded the mod into my profile, went to the Kenworth dealership and configured the truck to my liking. Now the differences between the free versions that I've used and this mod are fairly substantial. Let's start with available configurations.
Both the free mod and the RTA mod have two cab and chassis options, a day cab, and a sleeper, however the sleeper in the RTA version comes with additional farings on the back which look quite nice. The engine and transmission options are also Identical, however beyond that, the RTA version offers much more than the free one as far as parts and pieces, here are the differences:
-The RTA version of this mod offers some ten different bumper options(+7 vs the free mod),
-Three different fender mounted mirror options(+2 vs free),
-Four different bug shields(+1 vs free),
-Four different fuel tank styles(+2 vs free),
-I believe five different mirror options(+4 vs free),
-Two different FUNCTIONAL air horn options(+2 vs free),
-Two different interiors(the free mod also had two however the difference was only a sat nav),
-The truck comes with Dayton style two piece rims, with full color customization options of all three pieces, nuts included(including a chrome option).
-It also comes with two different Mack stearing wheels, and is compatable with the stearing wheel dlc, including the suicide knobs.
-All of the interior guages appear correct to my knowledge and function properly. Also the key is animated upon start/stop, and the parking brake is animated.
-The mud flaps, of which there are between two and three options of depending on the part of the truck, are also animated and move when you accelerate and brake.
-Both the free version and this RTA version have three different options for exhaust smoke.
-There are three different frame options, including a painted option which was not available with the free mod.
Now, I skipped a couple of configuration options that are available on both mods including the air cleaners and windshield visors.
As I said both the free mod and this one are compatable with the cabin accessories dlc mod.
Now, the quality and implimentation of the sound on the paid RTA mod vs the free one is not even comparable. The RTA mod has far superior sound.
CONS:
I have found one thing that I think is a bit of a let down, it may not be a big deal to others though. This truck sits pretty high, so high in fact that it will not work with advanced trailer coupling. That being said, I couldn't get it to work with the free mod either.
IS IT WORTH IT?
That's the question right. I guess if you want to look at it from a market standpoint, it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay. I am going to say that because the bootleg version of this mod is my favorite truck to use, and now I have a better version of it, that it was for me at least, worth the price.
There are a few youtube videos out there that show this mod off. If you're on the fence about it, I would suggest going and watching some of them and seeing if it may be something you'd like to purchase. If you're the type of person who likes to change trucks fairly often, take that into consideration aswell.
I like it, I'm happy with it, I hope this insight helps you in your decision.
However, I still think if they charged less, they would sell more.
Also they're operating completely on trust that you will not distribute or upload the mod to websites, which makes me wonder why I've never found a "full version" for free download anywhere.
I'm sure a lot of people will appreciate your review as it's quite a lot more thorough than I was expecting. :)
Well that's your opinion & your entitled to it. Let me ask you a question...How much is your time/effort worth? I mean, would you create a project like a truck (from scratch) & then give it away. Model after model? Keeping in mind that doing things for free will not feed you & your family.
RTA are a team of people trying to make a living from creating models for SCS games. No different than Dimtry & his team at Humster3D. Nor any different than people on TurboSquid selling their creations. It is my opinion, that people should be free to choose what they want to do with their art. If they wish to sell it, let them, if their wish to give it away, their choice. Just like you have a choice not to buy RTA models.
No offence, I think you might have the wrong site. As the RTA website[rta-mods.net] is so easy to navigate a child could buy from it. The prices for the models are there for all to see. You do not have to sign-up to see them, just scroll down below the images of the model you wish to buy & there you will see all your price & purchase options.
Oleg must be busy, I had my Mack email link within the hour after payment.
For those who think the prices are not fair, go sign up to the RTA forum & have your say. The RTA team have a poll about pricing, it's under the "Our work" thread in the main index. 32% of members think $5-$10 is a good price while 27% think $10-$15 is fair. So stop whining & go and have an input.
I've got it now, my bad. There was a link 'buy Mack here' that pointed to the forum. There's a shop therad. Anything needs registration and I was stuck as there is no link out of the forum to the main site. And I didn't had the inspiration to change 'forum' to 'www' in the adress.
Anyway, even if it's a perfect truck, it's to much money. I drive the truck from the seat mainly, and personally I don't like the Superliner dashboard very much, now as I've seen it (not an rta thing though).
But no advanced coupling -- is there an automatic mode coming with the 20$? Or do I always use mirrors -- for nothing?? ;)
@Sugarwolf: Thank you very much!
I would just like to say, that at least RTA make the effort to fix issues with their models. There are lots of people out there that just post them without fixing problems. Even if the model is a port from another SCS game, they still post it with the original errors.
I dont have the knowledge or time to put into something like that. If i did, and it was something i just created in my spare time, i woud likely distribute it for free. I can understand that the RTA folks and other serious modders like them are trying to either make a living or some supplemental income from doing these things for users, so i understand why there is a cost associated with some of the quality mods.My point was simply that i feel they charge too much for them, but their pricing structure is up to them.
Having a poll for their pricing tells me they dont believe they know what their work is worth. Now that they have prices in place, they cant exactly lower them without issuing refunds to everyone who has already paid. That wouldnt be fair at all, unless they started offering basic and premium versions at 2 different costs. Anyways, im perfectly fine with the Frieghtliner Classic XL and Vipers 389 for now.
Also the website clearly states above the purchase button that it may take anywhere between ten minutes to a day to receive the link, so four hours from payment clear isn't bad.
