Stumble over logs issue

What exactly does "stumble over logs" mean? I've had "Twinkle Toes" in my mission list for quite a while and have been watching the number actually move up and down. I realized the mission wasn't completing and started paying attention to the number and I clearly watched it go from 17 to 16 several times. It has now been fluctuating between 16 and 20 for a couple of runs from hazard 1 to 9. That doesn't seem correct. Thanks for any help.

That just means don't jump over logs. The brown things. Hit them and take damage.

I understand that the number should only go up if you hit the log, but being penalized for jumping over the log doesn't seem right. Why would a number that should be counting how many times you have done something ever go down?

And never mind. I still don't understand what the numbers were doing, but I managed to get past the missions by practically running into every log I could.
