It's f2p on epic, can't you install the client through that way ?

If it has EAC, then even if it's F2P, it wouldn't work. Or it will and then you get a ban. That's why I'm asking.

There is no EAC, personally I've been playing it on Linux using Proton. There's a whole help thread on the Palia Discord for getting it running on Steamdeck

The current workaround is to add the official launcher as a non-steam game[github.com].
If you can play it on switch, I see no idea why not

EAC has a linux client and a decent amount of games are supporting the linux client too, letting them work on steam deck.

Not all games, though.

I'm playing Palia on Steam Deck right now. Although I recommend waiting until the controls and UI are fully optimized.

I played on the switch and the controls seemed just fine, though typing is awful if you're not docked and using a keyboard.

I think it's because the Switch and Steam Deck have different ways of going about it. Steam Deck is basically a laptop/PC in handheld form and the switch is simply a handheld console so it might be different configurations.

Are you playing it through game mode or desktop mode? Does it detect other peripherals (mouse and keyboard) fine?

Through game mode. I don't have any peripherals (yet), I just bought my Steam Deck.
