this is nothing out of the ordinary since other games require this, too.
valve is not providing the infrastructure or any part of the game at all, so its perfectly fine and logical.
Some games do, some games don't. In my experience the better games tend to make it optional and the worse games tend to make it a requirement. I'm not wasting time to set up an account only to find out 5 minutes into the game that it is trash or doesn't run well. If I'm already logged in via steam that should be good enough. Same thing happens on PlayStation. About 50% of games just link to the PlayStation login and the other 50% want me to create an account first and that has turned out to be a red flag more often than not.
As I said, I only mentioned it because Josh mentioned it hadn't taken off and I wondered how many people, like me, just didn't want to have to make an account.
Food for thought for the devs. Maybe don't put roadblocks in the way of people trying your game.
If it bothers you so much, just download the Palia installer from their site, then you don't have to worry about it.
