Why can't I place a room here? (Screenshot included)
The house is completely unfurnished, so there are no objects which could be in the way, but it says "something is in the way".

Is there something being built on the left side of the courtyard? Are there any items decorated in the courtyard that might be throwing an invisible collision?

Have you tried using a hallway between the two rooms? I understand it might not be necessary, but if it works, that should help figure out it's something with the room to room.. Is the room still unattachable if you rotate it 180 and try to attach the other side?

It will let me place a porch or a door on that connection point, but not a hallway or small room. (The room I'm trying to attach this to is medium). There are no items on or around the buildings, I've checked many times now, and nothing else is being built.

Try removing that smaller room off the medium (medium?) room then attach the medium room to the courtyard then put the small room back onto the medium room and see if that works.

could also try removing the medium room, rotating the small room 180 degrees and attaching it to the courtyard.. then see if you can attach the medium room to the side of the small room.. if successful, detach both rooms, rotate them together and try to put the medium room onto the courtyard with the small room on the side like you are trying.
Looking at your screenshot....have you got something on the wall adjacent , where the darker green spot is? That maybe where your problem lies. Have a look, and move anything on that wall, inside or outside. That will stop you putting on a room. It is best that the walls are completely clear of all decor & furniture, on the side you want the room to go.

If you've put the door and porch on that snapping point, and still have them in your inventory to place, maybe the game thinks something is still attached? You could try putting the door and porch on your house else where to see if you can then snap your small room/hallway on.. ofc, if this works, you might jeopardize whatever snapping point(s) you used to host the door and porch temporarily..

Have you tried a Kilima Bay window? or a fireplace on that snapping point?
