I would rather the horrible RNG chappa pile/wreck pile was a system like this than what is is right now.
To clarify how it works in WoW: there's a big area and you survey, the surveying points you in a direction and shows you how far/close you are with colors green-red if I remember correctly. So it would be cool if you could survey anywhere, without limits on the area.
It can also double to paint paths on terrain without having to use 3d models for paths which counts towards your plot item limit for performance reasons...
The archaeology idea isn't bad. Not really sure how it worked in WoW, never played it (didn't like the subscription idea).
But the reason I stuck with treasure chests is because that is repeatable whereas archaeology, I am assuming once you find all the fossil pieces or whatever it is you need, then what? Or does it reset and you can find a new creature's remains piece of piece and when it is fully completed you can sell it or exchange it?
I edited my messaged up there but basically for Palia I would make it like this:
> you can dig anywhere, if you dig on the beach you get sand, if you dig in other terrain you could get other basic materials
> there is a surveying tool that you put down that indicates the direction of the nearest buried thing and maybe how far it is (it could look down if it's real close)
> the spawned buried objects work like all the other resources, random locations and they are shared and despawn after a few minutes just like rocks, plants, etc.
> the loot table would be mostly mats and some other unique materials depending on the map
> then there's the low RNG stuff that could have all the chappa pile/wreck pile stuff like the recipes, quest items and furniture
> there is no real time gating anything, just like all the other skills
Way more fun system than a daily locked single time click RNG that the piles are right now imo
And you get a new skill and tool out of it! And don't forget being able to "landscape (lite)" to paint the ground which saves on loading models for paths and stuff.
Sounds good.
As for my daily thing, the reason I would have made it daily is because the main treasure would have given loot that is actually useful and so that people don't abuse it, by constantly digging it up every 5 minutes.
The shovel would still be usable and one could still find all sort of things like what you mentioned too, except there would be no treasure chest if they already found one for that day.
Yeah like that would be a great addition, one cool treasure a day (I would remove the worst drops tho like 1 stone or 1 seed lmao), and some low RNG "lower treasures" you can dig up to collect!
Haha, I wasn't even considering adding stones to that chest.
