HELP! Cannot work out button configuration

I'm not sure if it's me or the game, but I cannot work out how to use the pickaxe/axe in the first "quest" I hit R and I can see the tools so I physically have them, just cannot workout what button in order to pull it out an use it. Am I just dumb??

Aside from button mashing my keyboard, I'm lost.

You just hit R to bring up the option wheel, and then use your mouse to click the one you want to use. The tool stays in your little action wheel thing, you don't actually move it to your inventory space.

Hold down R to open the hover the courser of the tool you want and click it
you can also bind your tools on a hotkeys.
for example i have Y (german layout/english is Z) my smokemobs and C my bow to fast pull it out and go for hunt :)
