Bug hunting is a royal pain

I can't use the honey thing yet, so I'm just bombing and all I catch are the common bugs. I need silk. Why is it so tedious? I know Rare and Epic are supposed to be hard, but this is ridiculous. More of a rant than anything else, really

The better bags increase your chance of catching the bugs. Still, even with the best bag, it might take up to 5 bombs to catch an epic (or more, I don't usually count).

Just like each tool has its upgrades, your Belt can be upgraded to increase the chance to catch bugs.

I legitimately don't understand your issue though. Are you having problems just *finding* rare bugs? Or are you complaining that you can't one-shot everything you come across?

I tested out catch rates and caught thousands of bugs over several weeks. Even with a Makeshift Belt it's like a 20-25% chance to catch Rares with each throw. If you're having problems aiming properly at stuff that moves continuously, try catching some of the bugs that "dash" and then hold still like Firebreathing Dragonflies by the Mirror Pond / Mirror Ruins.

the buzzy jar is great at leading you to bugs that has silk, picking sweetleafs will sometimes drop a bug that gives silk, as will mining around bahari. you can also chop trees in kilima for the golden bee :) pulsewater in bahari also has a lot of free roaming bugs like the glow bug, fairy mantis and azure grashopper. honey lure does not attract that many silk bugs actually maybe like 2-3 per round if youre lucky. its better to run around and learn how to spot them and where they usually spawn.
