Shared homes are a must !!!

I don't understand why my wife and I cant have a shared home. Without this option the online / coop aspect feels kinda pointless. Its just like animal crossing, just to show off a plot is boring. i want to build our plot and do our activities as one. There should be a create a family or a marriage / bond setup for a life simulator that has this feature.

Can you get a spouse in the game? Also, if you turn on where others can get to your home/plot, can they loot your stuff?

Not quite. At this point in time (0.178.0) as editor, the most you can do is the following:

• Help finish structures by adding planks/bricks/glass. (Visitors can do this without the Editor role).
  
• Cut down trees, break rocks.
  
• Move objects placed down by the plot owner.
  
• Use the overhead housing editor, but I'm not sure what functionality is provided as editor.

For sure visitors can pull weeds, water crops, and add materials to pending structures.
