Need help upgrading engine block

Bought a new air filter and engine block, when I try to upgrade it the game says I need to be holding an air filter or an engine block to remove it. When Im holding the respective part though, it only tries to install it and I have no option to remove the old part. Please help.

When you install it game removes the old part. You can find your removed part under storage menu.

i have the same problem and i don’t understand what should i do from the answer given, also after i got my first car i didn’t recieve a call from the buddy the developer talks about in the guide, i simply feel like stuck in one place without having any chamce of starting a race or changing the parts (if i hadn’t already changed them but i just don’t know it yet), moreover i’m confused by just holding a box to “change” the parts, thanks if someone answers

So I hope this still helps someone. It's a bit clunky, but what you gotta do is:

1. Point at your car and click your "confirm" button to customize it
   
2. Navigate through the menu until you find "Engine" customization and enter it
   
3. Now go buy some new parts
   
4. After you bought them, instead of trying to install them directly, you have to go to storage, choose the part you want to install and click "confirm" button
   
5. That will return you to garage and you still might be holding a box, but this time you can finally install it!

I think the game puts the newly bought parts in your invisible hands as you exit the store, but if you drop them by pressing A, or leave the customisation menu they are put into storage. Be careful because sometimes dropped parts can disappear without being sent to storage rack.
