Before I changed the compatibility to XP SP2, I reckon the number of game crashes to desktop I had encountered that were caused by this one particular error at least matched the number of hours I had played which was 30 at the time. Since changing to run the game in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode, I haven't had a single error or crash in the last 10 hours of gameplay.
Update - I have played the game for a total of 75 hours now and haven't had a single error or crash since changing the game to run in Windows XP (SP2) compatibility mode.
tabbing out of the game caused this for me a lot, will try the compatibility settings next time i play, though i thought i had done so.... possibly set to the wrong OS / SP though.
All those errors happened for me during the game, not while tabbing out, but it is certainly worth trying if you get exactly the same error - "Can't restore all surfaces (0x8876024B) This surface cannot be restored because it was created in a different mode" - I have played another 15 hours since I changed the compatibility mode so no crash in 25 hours now. It's sorted.
for my part the problem is that the game won't close correctly.
I can close the game via the menu, this leads to the game staying running somewhere, i can't restart it nor can i find the correct process in the taskmanager to terminate it and even worser i can't shut down my PC because its trying to close something it can't close. I had this issue first after playing Etherlords II for the first time.
If i provoke an crash i managed to terminate the processes of the game via taskmanager, this worked once but not the second time.
The game can't be startet as long as its running somewhere and also steam keeps thinking the game is running so the timer is now up at the moment for 31 hours and counting (after playing the tutorial and the first mission xD)
Im running win7 professional 64 bit.
I had an issue similar to this with another old game, the name escapes me, turns out the problem was steam not recognising it was closed, and constantly registering the game as playing when it wasnt.
Possibly a silly suggestion, but have you tried ending the steam.exe on the details tab of task manager, and seeing what difference, if any, that makes?
there should be a command prompt open, steam registers this command prompt instead of the etherlords because it hates alt tabbing and overlays. if youre looking in task manager you probably wont find it, but if theres a command prompt window open you might try killing that instead
