Kray's brooch?

I've won the game once and just played through the lake castle sequence again (this time as a fire mage) and couldn't find it. I'm assuming since he's fairly specific about it that it is an actual item you can find, yes? Any hints?

He told you that it was located in the castle, yes? If you were trapped in that castle (as the priestess is) and found something of great value, where would you keep it?

I apparently didn't return it to him on time and he left the reading room. Can I still return it to him or is this a missed opportunity? What happens when you do return it to him?

When you return the brooch, you get some XP points for keeping your word. Kray is actually surprised that you brought it back to him as promised. Kray then disappears for the rest of the game. (I assume he left for the city, as he talked about.)

What happens if you don't return the brooch? Does Kray "inconvenience" you somehow, as he threatened?

As far as I can tell, no. You just get "flavor text" from Bort telling you Kray isn't happy. I assume it affects some random line of text or something in the ending, but if so, it wasn't obvious.

The inconvenience is just missing out on the opportunity for some XP and a full score.
