I've tried looking everywhere, but I cannot find the giant mallet that the blacksmith wants and receive the modest reward.

I'm trying to win the sparring combat early in the game. I can't hit the enemy. It's ridiculous. At least 9 of 10 shots are missing him and at least 5 of 10 of his are hitting me. There's no way I can win with that ratio.
