I found a way to increase the frame rate above 60 using ini tweaks.
You need to edit the "Engine.ini" file found in "Documents\My Games\DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake\Steam\Config\WindowsNoEditor".

Add the following lines to the file:

[/script/engine.engine] bUseFixedFrameRate=True FixedFrameRate=120

Just change the number to whatever frame rate you desire and that will be the new FPS limit.

You shouldn't need to change the file to read-only. The game modifies the file during play but it doesn't remove or change anything you put there.

Also you can change many other settings in this file like anti-aliasing and so on.

BTW, since I saw some people asking, you can remove bloom by adding the following lines:

[/script/engine.renderersettings] r.BloomQuality=0

The game defaults to 5, but you can remove it by changing it to 0 or reduce the strength of it by putting a number between 1 and 4.

EDIT:
I've made a guide showing all of this and more.

you should throw this in the guides section so it won't be lost among the others.

I’m considering it. I’m still playing around and seeing what can be done. I might upload some pictures comparing the graphical differences. I just wanted to get this info out quickly for now instead of sitting on it for a couple of days.

i do not see a need for this. but good to know it is possible. (60 fps is fine for me no drops at all on my 2060 rtx)

why in the seven hells would you want to do that?

tell me one benefit of playing a pixel art JRPG with more than 60 fps

you're literally playing an Excel sheet

there's no reason to force the game to go above 60 fps lmao

i can't hahaha sorry

When playing on a 120hz TV it's literally the difference between a blurry, jerky game and nice smooth scrolling. But that may not be the case here because like the FF remaster there seems to be some kind of hitching in thier engine.

Strange since the original games they had no problem making sure it ran smoothly on interlaced tv whether you used RF or S-video. You would think they would figure out how to do that on modern hardware since plenty of games using the same engine do it up to 400+ fps.

Then don't do it if you're fine with it. I'm personally fine with 60 fps but it looks so much better with a higher fps.

Also, I wouldn't totally call it a pixel art game. The characters are but many of the environments look fairly high quality. It certainly looks higher quality than Octopath Traveler for instance.

I've now made a guide detailing all of this. The OP is updated with a link to the guide.

That's now method #4 to increase fps. In any case, I still need to test it with this method here but with all others, UUU, cheat engine, and P3RFix, I ran into an actual gameplay issue using 240 fps.

When trying to climb these stairs in the tower of transcendence, the character would just get stuck at the bottom of them and refuse to climb. I tested various values and the highest I could get away with was 144. There's still a bit of a pause before they climb then but it works.

I'm guessing some of the game physics are tied to framerate.

Edit: as I thought, same stairs issue using this. It's fine though 144 is still plenty smooth :)
Edit2: realised I said "lowest" I could get away with when I meant highest, oops.

I’ll check when I get there. So far I’ve been playing at 140 fps without any issues but I’ve been on my laptop while out of town. I’ll start playing at a higher fps when I get back home to my desktop.

maybe those of us with monitors that run at a high refresh rate like playing games at a high refresh rate? What an absolutely idiotic comment. You probably think people can't see more than 60 fps - response time is a thing...

140 should be fine, mostly. I've seen some weird little physics oddities using the ship but nothing as game stopping as those stairs at 240 fps. That screenshot I posted was also the first issue I'd seen playing at 240 since just before the pyramid.

Who honestly cares what we do with the game we bought? You clearly can't perceive a difference 60 Hz and 120 Hz being objectively clearer. Octopath 2 has 120 FPS, Romancing Saga 2 has it, as does Triangle Strategy and Dragon Quest XI, all Square Enix games. Clearly, you care enough to bellyache about it because reasons. Get over it.
