The fun thing about sage is that they can be decent fighters as well as learn all of the spells. I think it is considered a direct upgrade for priest and wizard. I will warn you that the sage learns spells a bit more slowly than priest or wizard. I also don't know if priest learns some abilities (not spells) that a sage can't learn.
Right now I'm dealing with the Dying Fires and on Draconian they don't play around. Constant paralysis, sleep, even with accessories on, and constantly calling for backup. I think I'm just a bit under leveled for this part.
Martials can pretty much reclass whenever.
Mage should wait until 21 for Oomph. Priests can reclass to Sage whenever.
