Body Type A and B makes no sense in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake
This labeling is so performative and confusing. The fact that the game actually uses he/him or she/her pronouns automatically when picking Body Type A or B makes the entire A/B labeling ultra-performative and nonsensical. Why not just use Male or Female labels, then, because the game clearly just assumes that anyway? I hate it so much when activists who know nothing about the game force developers to change things that make absolutely no sense in the context of the original game or even in the remastered version.

If you were going to go to the trouble of implementing this "correctly," you would have Male, Female, and Customize options. Under Customize, you could pick Body A/B, select pronouns, and choose a voice—you could mix and match to your heart's content without alienating 99.9% of players. But no, you force Body Type A/B on every single person and then assume the pronouns anyway, thus alienating the 0.1% of people who would have wanted this feature in the first place. This just creates a worse experience for the other 99.9% of players for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Activists, please get the hell out of game development. Please and thank you. You clearly don't even care about the things you claim to care about because they're implemented so badly.

It is strange because like you say they constantly refer to A as male and B as female.
Yes, that's what ultimately got me to buy the game anyway. I figured the worst-case scenario was Square misinterpreting a boycott with, "we don't want dragon quest in the west", which is actually how they would have interpreted it because they have no clue what western audiences actually think about these topics - they are literally not paying attention and are just listening to a select group of people giving them bad advice. I was torn, but I bought it anyway because I love this franchise and the game, as far as I can tell, is basically what you'd want from a remake - it's 99.99% there.

I can understand boycotting junk like Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but I think this game is far more nuanced.

That's BS - This isn't the second dragon quest game that came out here - If it was you'd have an argument.

You give Square too much credit. Their executives are clueless and incredible incompetent at their jobs, as evidenced by dozens of modern examples.

Their not as bad as EA, also considering DQ is one of the biggest franchises over here, this game not selling would be because of an issue with the game - DEI and price point would be that issue. This isn't a brand new franchise their trying to sell.

DQ is niche in the west, sorry to break it to you.

DQ3 HD-2D is doing about as well as many other niche jrpgs do on steam. Around the same. It's fine.

Sorry this isn't 1990's -DQXI sold MORE units overseas then in Japan.

Last I checked it was 5m copies in Japan, and 6m worldwide. That was in 2021

Considering how small Japan is compared to the rest of the world. I'd argue it is still Niche outside of Japan, where in japan it is one of their best sellers.

Even if it sold more Worldwide.

This game won't get close to those numbers worldwide, I doubt even in Japan, because it is just a remake.

DQ12 though will sell incredibly well when it drops.

Luckily we westerners have a pretty devoted fanbase! I’m hoping this title sells well (or better than their expectations at least). Releasing on so many platforms is a great start.

Yes I agree.

I'm still bitter we didn't get any of the DQ X love over here though.

It's also worth noting that it takes more than 1 reasonably successful game for an entire franchise to get out of its niche status. Historically, this series has been niche to the point where we didn't even get many entries, and most entries did not sell well. We didn't get the MMO either. Considering this is a remake of a niche game, I think expecting this to perform like DQ11 is unreasonable and I don't even think square execs are even that delusional.

DQ3 HD-2D is already doing better than Octopath Traveler 2. It likely cost less to make than that game too. It's fine.

It only takes 1 major game in order to bring a franchise out of your "Niche" state - It depends on the creators to keep that thunder going - however considering some of you are SE shills - I can see why they overcharge their games now.

How the hell am I SE shill when I said the execs were incompetent? I'm just blocking you, you're toxic af.

IDC you said your buying it to show support to SE to one of their franchises - That's 100% shill talk - If you buy their games at full price and everything else - they'll think that it's acceptable the things that aren't acceptable in their games/pricing.

But hey that imaginary goblin monster in your head says otherwise.

Nice strawman. Actually, the issue is pretty accurate and important because it's literally not satisfying the woke side, the anti-woke side, or even the player who doesn't care. It's lose-lose-lose for everybody and it should be called out for how performative and pointless it is.
