Can’t name my character Erdrick?
I wanted to use the “official” name for my protag, but apparently the game just flat out says no. I also had a feeling that maybe the game was checking for inappropriate words, so I typed in a few swears, and lo and behold, it gave me the same message. Is it because “drick” can sound like “♥♥♥♥”? That’s incredibly dumb if so, especially for a single player rpg.

Because Erdrick is a Title, not a given name.

The actual official name for both the male and female version of the DQ3 protag is something else entirely.

Oh, I had a feeling it was a title, but wasn’t sure. You can’t name yourself Erdrick if you haven’t earned it after all. Was it like that in the original too?

wasn't their name Loto or something? Or was that just the male? I'm not sure.

on the NES I think you only were able to have 4 characters in a name. In later versions with more characters, yea, it was like that. Game would actually roast you for even trying it.

For those looking for the official name it is Arus(u) going form Hiragana, in the CD Drama Arel. Though the source noted that in the official screenshots the Hero(ine) was named also Arus(u). Which you can even see here on the Steam Page.

No, Loto (or better Roto) is the Japanese title instead of Erdrick.

Which further supports A - ru - su, as those had been just three characters going from Katakana: アルス or hiragana: あるすm though I am sure they used Katakana.

I checked, you could have a longer name, but only the first four chars would show up in battle or in menus.

I remember playing this and being so surprised at the part of warping into the world only to realize that it was the same world as the first game.

I played it blind and never seen it coming.

In the NES version of Dragon Warrior 3 you weren't allowed to name the hero Erdrik. I was quite surprised at the time. I had no idea that the game was a prequel. We were poor, our only internet access was at the public library. I remember my father bringing home the game from the local flea market.

They won’t let you use curse words as your name? That’s just sad.

Erdrick is a name. And on the NES, it fits, you have up to either 8 or 10 characters. Only 4 will display in certain menus.

It is silly they are not allowing certain names in a single player game.

I was able to name my hero as "Erdrȋck" by using the other variation of letter "i" in the keyboard. That's the only way you can name him like that imo. You can try it as well.

No, they just realized that giving a dude named Erdrick the honorary title of Erdrick at the end of the game would look really, really dumb.

I don’t see why, don’t they localize it as Loto now, anyway?
