Starting Party Ideas
So since release is getting closer, I wanted to know if anybody has any plans for their initial party makeup.

My thoughts so far:
Hero- Of course.
Monster Wrangler- I want to try out the new class, so I'm going to replace warrior from my old party with this one.
Mage- I like having some dedicated magic early on, personally, even if I use spells sparingly to conserve MP.
Jester- I *always* start with a jester in my party. It's hard early on, true, but the payoff when you get to turn them into a sage is nice.

Depending on how this composition feels, I might make a couple switches. If I don't like the monster wrangler, I'll probably switch it out for a warrior. Or if I feel like I need more healing because items in between fights aren't enough, I might end up swapping out mage for a cleric, and let the hero double as the caster, despite the more limited capacity for that.

What are everybody else's thoughts? Have a game plan ready? Or waiting to see how you feel when the time comes?

My go to will be

1. Male Hero

2. Male Thief that will become a Martial Artist later, possibly going Warrior in between for the abilities

3. Female Priest that will later become a Warrior, possibly going Martial Artist in between for the abilities.

4. a Female Mage that will get a Words of Wisdom to become a Sage.

I'll likely have some Thieves in reserve for item grinding and a try out a Monster Wrangler as well.

Been a while but I went with stock warrior cleric mage. Though reclassing a fighter to a sage is some good stuff. Quick heals / buffs are great

Also I find it funny people mention male / female when the game has removed them.

Honestly never had much luck with thief or martial artist, but most of my experience playing DQ3 was as a kid, so the extent of my strategic planning was "warrior hit good, mage blow thing up," more or less.
Maybe I should give some of the others a try though.

Thieves are solid fighters who can use Whips and Boomerangs among other weapons, and have abilities to help explore and find treasures, along with a few attacks added for the HD-2D remake and they can steal randomly after battles. The percentage chance goes up as they level and having more than one thief in the party does stack the odds

Martial Artists get pretty good as they level up and their Critical Hit rate bonus grows, they act fast and have high strength on top of that. Keep in mind if you start off with one they can use early game weapons but they'll actually lower attack power, until you get Claws/Knuckledusters and certain other exceptions they're better off unarmed.

Dunno if that's changed in anyway for HD-2D Remake to where those weapons don't lower attack or if they'll still be able to equip said weapons that lower their attack power

Resilience and Stamina are separate stats in HD-2D and I believe Resilience was updated to affect defense instead of Agility like other versions normally handle it so Warriors look like they'll have the edge in raw defense this time around.

But Thieves and Martial Artists used to have better raw defense due to the way Agility affected it in other versions though their equipment tended to add less defense

The characters are still ultimately Male and Female it's not that deep

Yeah, I think that might be the problem I had, I used them early on and they just weren't great in the first 20-30 minutes. Whips and boomerangs are really good, I recall, but not super readily available early on. And martial artist, I actually recall being confused when I gave them a weapon and they go really weak. It felt like a rip-off, not being able to upgrade their weapons like all the others.

I might see about using them a little ways into the game instead, even if I have to roll a new NPC once I get some decent weapons. Never hurts to have variety to choose from, after all!

@Jondalf apparently they showed you can get a standard Boomerang earlier in the game than normal in the HD-2D remake in the Dreamer's Tower. And a Thorn Whip is a pretty early mini medal reward too in all remakes
Casual Hero Sep 12, 2024 @ 5:32am
My favorite party the last time I played was Hero, Fighter, Thief, Priest.

I'm not quite sure what I want to do for my first party this time around. Since they're changing the stats up, Thieves won't be mega-tanks like the previous versions. Maybe I'll swap the Thief for the Monster Wrangler.

I still love using a Fighter as my main damage dealer, because you just can't beat crits. They're cheap to upkeep, too!

I also can't go without the female Priest in my party, because I just love her design.

how easy is to change a party? like you need to grind a lot?

The starting town has a guild for you to create and swap characters any time you wish and DQ3 always was able to do so since the NES.
Changing classes of current members I believe require to be level 30 at Alltrades Abbey.

The only class you'd want to strategize around is the Sage which you can change a Gadabout to for free at a certain level or use a specific item to change a party member into one.

Also when you change class, your character I believe will have their level cut in half, but retain abilities and spells and half the stats gained from their former class.
Personality also modifies stat growth. The customization is really deep, but really grindy.

If Merchant is still in the class lineup:
Merch, Hero, Priest and Thief. My usual early game team in order to secure finances.

My mind changes alot, so I don't ever have a set team in mind by the time class changes become an option. Merchant or Thief might become Sage candidates for me.
