70% "only" how come, want to buy but : question first
Just finished the dq11, picking back up the serie after 10+ years,
tempted to buy this game but somehow the review percentage seems rather low for what i expected, sure 70 is good for any serie, but i feel this is the kind of game serie where 90% is more what you'd expect.

so my quest is, what are the main thing people are complaining about ?

Most of us complaining about balance change, new class is OP, slow ship and bird, bad designed post-game, tedious and balance breaking collectives as if mini medal is not enough... list goes on but common things are these.
I may replay FC/SFC/GBC version but not this one.

Maybe we set the bar too high, but come on it's DQ3 of course we expect better.

Anyways that's my take, people outside Japan should not take this review score seriously.
some of us are butthurted overhyped grumpy old JRPG fanboys that's all.

I don't think there was ever a play time requirement for leaving a reviews, you can find <1 hour playtime reviews on pretty much anything.

That said, you DO have to own or have owned the game to leave a review. There's also a few standing theories that reviews with below a certain threshold of playtime and reviews from players who refunded are not included in the calculation for the review score.

I was pretty sure there was a time when you had to have game time in to review a game, but I could be misremembering.

These days I believe they put a disclaimer on the review, something like "This game has been refunded."

Those are interesting points. I've read several Japanese reviews criticizing the Temple of Trials specifically and physical classes falling off in later dungeons. That's definitely my least favorite part of the game but it's also a super secret extra challenge.

My sense is the player is *supposed* to roll up new party members for the specific weapon trials, but instead everyone wants to brute force their way through with their default party. And then they get wrecked and post criticisms about unfairness.

I wouldn't mind if it got a balance patch, but I also don't think it ruins the game.

I've been a Dragon Quest fan since the Nintendo Power promotion and I played 3 when it came out, so from that perspective, the 3HD-remake probably sits in the top third of the whole mainline series -- it's an Excellent game, of course, but I don't think it's necessarily the best one to introduce a new fan to, and I didn't necessarily feel it had much to offer me besides a trip down memory lane. Some of that's simply how I feel about 3 in general -- I think 4, 5, 7, and 11 are better or at least more structurally interesting games. It's also kind of a weird order to release it -- maybe it's a more "exciting" game than 1&2 are/their remake will be, but the entire back half of the game does not really stand alone at all in the way that prequels usually don't. The writing is just Fine -- all of the nonsense about WOKE DEI LUR LUR LUR puts aside the fact that it's not a particularly lively translation; there's nothing wrong with it in any way, but I guess I was hoping for the heights of the 4-6 DS remakes. It's not bad -- nothing in the game is bad -- I just found it to be an extremely workmanlike remake. It's gorgeous -- probably the best monster sprite art in the franchise -- and it's an Excellent remake of a game that I probably would never play the original game of. I think it will settle into the reputation of a minor release overall that will still probably end up being the way most people play 3 from now on.

The game is being review-bombed by trolls who didn't play it. A huge number of clickbait grifters on Youtube posted dishonest videos designed to manufacture outrage over the game. In response, people with poor media literacy skills fell for the scam and ran to Steam in protest. Finding any legitimate discourse on DQ3 requires wading through an ocean of spam and fake news. Nearly every thread on this forum is packed wall-to-wall with easily disproven statements about authorial intent, localization, or market data. Bans have been common and more than one lengthy thread was locked and deleted outright.

Sales numbers are remarkably high, and concurrent player counts on Steam even outpaced Final Fantasy XVI. The game is a huge success by all metrics. The low(ish) review scores are more indicative of Steam's lax moderation towards quality control in the review process itself.

That having been said, the early game is a bit easy even on the hardest difficult setting. The vehicles can feel sluggish which some players find frustrating while exploring the overworld. I've personally encountered a bugged achievement which hasn't been patched yet. Some Japanese posters have been experiencing issues with the game crashing, but I haven't seen any English-language threads on this issue so I'm assuming it's a region-specific problem.

Other than those minor gripes the game is great.
You do not know what a grifter is.

This is a good game... but its not $60 good. I cannot recommend this game outside true fans at its release price but I'm more willing to suggest it at $50 or $40. Use this engine for a new experience sure I'd say go buy it... but I've played this game 4-5 times over the years and the loyalty to source material means the you are also faced with the "This game hasn't aged..." experience. UI limits what it shows you when you need it... so some status effects do not appear on the UI but you have to see/decipher when the camera shows your characters. Music is solid, graphics are solid, I haven't had any bugs, but theres these little QoL touches that SQEX should have done that just aren't here.

Something as little as scrolling 6 pages of spells despite only having 2.5 spells a page. Things like equipment being very deceptive in raw numbers VS performance. Text Speed being snails pace at default speeds, voiced lines have no auto advance (this has been in a few Dragon Quest games now.) I could continue, but its these little 2024 touches that someone could have pointed out during QA which makes it harder to recommend at $60.

Oh yeah, the voice acting. They sure spent money to get voice actors for this. There sure are voiced lines in this game.

review bombing doesnt exist.
What a bizarre thing to say. Not only is this objectively wrong, the Steam developer docs even have a section on how to deal with review bombing: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/reviews

Fortunately, most of the people complaining on the forums are tourists who were sent here by YouTubers and never had any intention of playing nor buying the game, and so they can't leave reviews. Nearly all of the negative reviews are from Japanese gamers complaining about balance changes, and to be fair, it is balanced significantly differently from the NES game. There's also some people complaining about the price, which you get on any remake of an old game.

for me, review bombing is a myth.
if a game is good it has good reviews, if a game is bad it has bad reviews.
thats the simple truth, no matter if they come in bulk or not.

besides almost all the time that people say a product is getting review bombed, is just that they cant swallow the pill that their cherished product, has an irredeemable problem.

that being said i don't think it matters much since i think the guy that mentionned reviewbomb in the first place, for this game is heavily exaggerating.

i'm considering to buy it but at a lower price and with a mod to remove the censoring.

I mean you can get pictures of naked ladies on the internet and look at them while you play the game if you're really that desperate. I just think it's so weird that you're really upset that this game for children doesn't have sexual enough content for you.

indeed, thanks for the tip

i don't really care about seeing nudity, i'm 29 i've seen my share of naked people or whatever else it is they censored.
it's just for the principle of it, i hate censoring in media and i don't think it should ever be some, no matter how small it is, cause once it starts where does it end.

and beside i intend to have a full male party because i'm both gay and a misogynist

That's awesome buddy, keep fighting the good fight. This is so important. I can't believe that government censorship is preventing us from seeing boobs in a children's game. You are so right that children's games need to have more boobs in them and that not showing children boobs is censorship. We must fight censorship in every tiny, petty, meaningless form!

i know you're sarcastic and somehow a bit riled up about me deciding to do something that won't really change your life, i mean, you first commented in this convo the moment i said i wanted to get rid of the censoring...
but i still think that your last sentence is 100% correct no amount of it is ok

good news indeed, i've just got a key for the game from a third party site, and its downloading.

while it appears that you're right that this game seems to have been quite sparred, i'm still gonna download that mod because.. well we're on PC and we can, so..

I mean, look, man, I just wanted to enjoy a videogame. I don't know why you gotta insist on inserting politics into everything.

Hey no reason not to if that's what you want, and having chatting with Mike, he really is a swell guy and a fantastic modder.
