Your first JRPG?
Hello!

What was your first JRPG?

Mine was Phantasy Star IV for the Genesis. I remember renting it at Blockbuster one weekend and getting disappointed I couldn't clear it before I had to go back to school. The farthest I got was a desert area and I remember fighting a big worm. The first JRPG I cleared from start to finish was Pokemon Red. The first Squre/Enix game I played was FF IIX (PS1), and the first Square Enix game I played from start to finish was FF4 on the DS.

Final Fantasy. Dragon Warrior was second. Phantasy Star IV was definitely one of my favorites when it came out, so that's a great entry into JRPGs.
FF1 NES

My first way back in the time before time was UItima 3: Exodus, though I was really too young to know what the hell was going on.

My first JRPG where I actually had any idea what was happening would be FF1.

Little Ninja Brothers, a 1 to 2-player action RPG from the NES. In Japan it's Super Chinese II (the first game was released as Kung Fu Heroes in the US, which is not an RPG).

ZOMG! I love that game!

Its exploration plays pretty much like a very polished early Dragon Quest game, only when the screen flashes white, your random encounters are action scenes with waves of horn-faced somersaulting kung fu punks, rocks, pools, and floating treasure chest power ups. Instead of a life meter the game assigns you a number 10. When you get hit, it goes down to 9. You rest at the Hotel to bring it back up. I was enchanted with this mathematical usage and ever since then, for years, I kept searching the back of games for these "Hit Points". If it had them, I wanted it. That's how I got into the Gold Box AD&D games and yes, the Dragon Warrior series.

Truthfully I can't think of a better introduction to RPGs for a child than that.

My sister started off better at figuring out how to get to the next plot point than I was. I tended to take what the games told you way too literally and seriously.

[Edit:] It had "command battles" too by the way. Especially for boss battles.

Trails in the Sky FC, when I was a kid I saw my classmate playing on his PC back in 2008~2010. It opened the gate to the new world for me. Love the world building, the music, characters designs and their interaction and relationship. I thought their S-crafts are all so cool. Every NPC is vivid like they actually living in that world.

Back in the rental age, probably. I might've dabbled in Final Fantasy IV in some way or another. Its difficulty spikes are even today more than I really enjoy.

No idea when I first saw Chrono Trigger. Super Mario RPG was the more lasting impression.

Though I was the outlier who favored N64, leaving a long gap where I barely cared about RPGs that didn't involve Pokemon. (meaning the Playstation FF games largely gathered dust)

I remember watching my older brother play a few JRPGs as I was growing up and I didn't understand them. When I was a bit older he rented "Shining Force 2" for the Sega Genesis and I watched him play through some of it and I was now more familiar with video games so I started playing it too. I think I read somewhere that the people that made the Shinning Force series (later forming Camelot for Nintendo) were heavily influenced by Dragon Quest and were basically making their own version of it but as a strategy RPG. I adore that game and would love to someday play Shinning Force 3.

I'm a new arrival on the JRPG scene, my first one was Tales of Berseria in 2019. Now it's one of my go-to genres. Currently Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch Remastered is my all-time favorite. I still have many classics to experience though. :)

When you say JRPG do you mean strictly turn based or any JRPG subgenre?

I’m not sure but probably Legend of Dragoon.

Doesn't have to be turn based.

I'm new to the Dragon Quest series. I love the feeling of discovering a whole new world.

I looked this up and I'm genuinely surprised they sent out a whole game with a subscription. The closest I can relate to this is buying gaming mags for Playstation 1 demo discs. I was 13 at the time and couldn't afford to buy games.

I still remember the feeling of going through a game and not knowing what to do XD

I'm itching to play PSIV again.
