My first JRPG where I actually had any idea what was happening would be FF1.
ZOMG! I love that game!
Its exploration plays pretty much like a very polished early Dragon Quest game, only when the screen flashes white, your random encounters are action scenes with waves of horn-faced somersaulting kung fu punks, rocks, pools, and floating treasure chest power ups. Instead of a life meter the game assigns you a number 10. When you get hit, it goes down to 9. You rest at the Hotel to bring it back up. I was enchanted with this mathematical usage and ever since then, for years, I kept searching the back of games for these "Hit Points". If it had them, I wanted it. That's how I got into the Gold Box AD&D games and yes, the Dragon Warrior series.
Truthfully I can't think of a better introduction to RPGs for a child than that.
My sister started off better at figuring out how to get to the next plot point than I was. I tended to take what the games told you way too literally and seriously.
[Edit:] It had "command battles" too by the way. Especially for boss battles.
No idea when I first saw Chrono Trigger. Super Mario RPG was the more lasting impression.
Though I was the outlier who favored N64, leaving a long gap where I barely cared about RPGs that didn't involve Pokemon. (meaning the Playstation FF games largely gathered dust)
(Phantasy Star 4 is HYPE)
Doesn't have to be turn based.
I'm new to the Dragon Quest series. I love the feeling of discovering a whole new world.
I looked this up and I'm genuinely surprised they sent out a whole game with a subscription. The closest I can relate to this is buying gaming mags for Playstation 1 demo discs. I was 13 at the time and couldn't afford to buy games.
