It's a HD2D remake not a 2D one.
And this game is currently on sale for pre-orders as cheap as $46.
Although they are leagues ahead of where they were with octopath 1 - the 2nd entry was fantastic with a ton of graphical touches.
I would also not be surprised if this was more expensive to make than the Romancing Saga 2 remake, but whatever, I'm getting both day 1.
Also you can just wait for a sale.
But ironically it will not be the price tag that would be turning away the old fans now. :(
If games had gone up like other things over the years, this would be costing closer to $180, but realistically game devs know people aren't going to be paying that kind of cash for a game (hell the average person is struggling to put food on the table in this economy and minimum wage in a lot of the US is still only $7.25 an hour) so they've tried to keep the base game prices down while getting more money through DLCs and whatnot.
Square-Enix is one of the few that don't typically add a hundred day one dlc's to their jrpgs though. At the end of the day, the $60 pricetag is more than fair and yet we're getting discounts on pre-orders making it as low as $46.
Hell, just the other day I was thinking about when I got Final Fantasy Legend 1 back in the day -- a Gameboy game that lasts a few houts -- for $40. Over $90 or so today.
And as mentioned above, for the price you're getting a complete game with absolutely no extra monetization. And remember SQEX is quite good about having plenty of sales -- so if it's too much, just wait. In a year it'll almost certain be minimum 40% off, more if you're a GMG XP member.
Maybe I should go knock on SquareEnix's door and sell them a rock that repels tigers for $7m.
