I might get X-Plane 12 once it is released, depending on how well it runs on my system. At least I'm going to give the demo a try. I have nothing against Microsoft's offering, but there's no point getting it before I upgrade my hardware.
I usually don't spend money on add-ons, so I can also easily change the platform if I feel like it. But for now, I'm happy with what i've got.
I have MSFS with PMDG and Fenix but there are so many things I don't like (taxi behaviour) or missing that I came back to XP as my primary sim and I'm loving it!
Does the payware aircraft in msfs2020 still not match XP payware aircraft in terms of flight model? Someone said to me that it can never match given how the msfs2020 platform works.
Personally, I don't think MSFS will catch up with XP in this regard. XP feels way superior regarding the physics.
I also find MSFS feels static, as if you don't need many micro adjustments to fly. This is with the payware kodiak 100 sws. Honestly XP11 default aircraft feel better.
Take a look at what SimCoders and X-Aerodynamics offers for default aircraft and even some third-party aircraft. I have a number of addons from SimCoders and I really, really like what they've done with the stock 172. Paired up with FMOD Experience by SimAcoustics and using my PFC Cessna yoke hand-flying it for hours on end is so enjoyable.
I feel that A2A is truly going to shine in MSFS, love their addons in P3D. Their first addon for MSFS will be their Piper PA-24. I have no doubt they will bring their Cessna 172 at some point and I'm speculating that in addition to a steam gauge version they will include a glass cockpit version (G1000 NXi thanks to Working Title). I would have really no reason to the Airfoillabs Cessna 172 for XP (I have both of them for XP).
Again right now if I feel like flying a Cessna 172 with a glass cockpit I'll hop in X-Plane, if A2A was to drop a Cessna 172 with a glass cockpit tomorrow I most likely wouldn't be using XP anymore for it.
I do have a Cessna 152 from Just Flight and Carenado (use the Nhadrian mod with it) for XP. When Just Flight brings their Cessna 152 to MSFS I see little reason to use it in XP. It's possible when that eventually does happen I won't even be using XP at that point. I know Just Flight are working on their Tomahawk currently and then it will be their Archer, no idea what is after that.
If I feel like flying cross-country outside of California (I have Orbx TrueEarth HD for both the North and South) I will hop in MSFS most of the time and I will even use MSFS for flying inside of California. I've done it quite a lot actually, almost to the point that I'm flying more in MSFS than XP despite having Orbx TrueEarth. For others Ortho and simHaven scenery can only go so far (which I do have installed too).
MSFS even has a renowned XP third-party developer hopping over to MSFS and will be including their A310 at no charge to the stock sim in November and please correct me if I'm wrong but I think iniBuilds said they're done with XP (maybe that was someone else).
As someone who has been in the hobby for a very, very long time my interest in XP just isn't what it used to be and I'm not just someone who goofs around in flight sims. I personally feel that MSFS is where the hobby is headed for both the casual and serious simmer and I feel that XP12 will not be as popular as XP11 given MSFS is out there.
I'm currently using MSFS no differently than XP and P3D. Honestly if I had to start all over again I wouldn't bother with XP and P3D and just go with MSFS. I'm really excited for A2A to bring their first product to MSFS. Again the only reason I'm really holding onto XP and P3D is because of my addons I've collected over so many years.
Welcome to XP, here are my suggestions to get started...
