When you register you must sign up with your full name, when you connect you don't have to. What is acceptable when you connect is listed in the VATSIM CoC.
No, not normally. They can if they desire ask for proof of your real identity but I highly doubt this is really used that much. I can really only seeing it being the case if you have a name that raises questions.
So here is what I like about Pilot2ATC. You don't have to file a flight plan if you don't want to. You can take off without using it and fly somewhere and then decide that you want to use Pilot2ATC. I get near an airport, look up the approach frequency, contact approach and request vectors for an instrument approach and go from there.
I can file a flight plan in the air. I can request taxi and let Pilot2ATC give me directions or request taxi to a specific runway. You can request to stay in the pattern on takeoff to practice landings. You can request the option for landing so you can do touch and go's. There are so many things you can do with it and even use it to create flight plans. It has a moving map. I can go on and on.
Check it out at Pilot2ATC.com and watch some of the videos to get an idea of what it can do. For me it was well worth the money.
Oh, I will point out one issue I had with Pilot2ATC. I tried using it with a desktop microphone (a cheap one). What I discovered was the sound from my surround sound speakers was interfering with the microphone's ability to clearly hear what I was saying and Pilot2ATC could not understand me. So I purchased a gaming headset that has a microphone and the problem was solved. You may not need a gaming headset but I would recommend one or at least a microphone that clips on your head (you know what I mean).
You can disconnect on VATSIM at any point during your flight. You can also reconnect as you wish (just be sure that won't cause an issue). It is courteous though to let the controller know that you're going to disconnect. Quite frankly if this is what is holding you back then you have nothing to worry about. I would go ahead and sign up, the experience you will receive will be way above what you currently get.
