It doesn't NEED any payware addon, even less than ever in case you are a beginner in flight simulation. Just start, learn how it works, and get the appropriate addons that fit to your preferred style of play the sim later. You'll know what you need when the time is right.
In my opinion, yes, it is worth. I'm done with MSFS for many reasons long ago, even their newest iteration will not change that. I've learned my lesson.
Having played for a few months, I'm really torn between the two. The graphics of FS2020 are outstanding, even compared to XP11 with Orbx's True Earth scenery, but as an actual simulator FS2020 doesn't feel real like XP11 does. As a developer, I appreciate the mature and comprehensive API XP has, whereas the unfinished and diabolical SimConnect API of FS2020 is a waste of time. That's why there are so few 3rd party aircraft for FS2020 even after all this time.
At the moment, X-Plane is an excellent simulator, and Flight Simulator is a beautiful game.
Honestly, both are worth their asking price.
It's way more realistic, than MFS2020.
So to recap:
MSFS is more of a fun, not realistic sim. It's great for flying GA and doing VFR flying even though the physics are broken.
X-Plane is realistic and has many study-level planes. If you want to do realistic flying in an airliner (on Vatsim or IVAO, for example), this sim is the way to go.
