GPS too complicated
I just bought this sim a while ago because I wanted to do some casual flying like I used to do with Flight Sim 10. How I can simply punch in my start and destination locations and have the sim enter all the waypoints for me? Simply put, I now have a $70.00 piece of software on my computer and I cant play it because it is too complicated.

It's not too far complicated from what you did in FSX, you just need to find a flight planner (I prefer simbrief) then download the file in the X-Plane 11 format, then navigate to the steam directory for the game, goto Output, Then goto FSM plans (create one if not already) and throw the file in there. goto the FMS (It's the screen with a huge keypad below it.. numbers letters etc.) click on ROUTE MENU then click CO ROUTE LIST, It should list everything in the folder you created, simply click it to load it up, enter your flight number then click execute. As far as I know this only works for the default boeing aircraft, unsure about the MD-80 and any other payware/freeware aircraft.

The plans file format MUST be fms, however this might be different with some payware aircraft

You can add these folders in while the game is running so you can plan flights without disconnecting from vatsim (if you use it)

There are plenty of YouTube videos you can learn from. A picture paints a thousand words as they say.

"I now have a $70.00 piece of software on my computer and I cant play it because it is too complicated."

No, you mean "there is a $70.00 piece of software on my computer that I can't play, because I can't figure it out.". Big difference.

X-plane requires you to learn real world proceedures and instruments.

Learning all this is part of the fun. As noted Youtube videos are a great place to start.

Entering plans, sids and stars is frustrating at first until you understand how it all fits together.

Once you do your first flights using real techniques you'll find it very satisfying.

I use Little NavMap as my flight planner. With that you can make it as complicated or as easy as you want to. It will, however, take a bit of reading, but it's not very difficult to use. For example I just created a flight plan from KCOS to KABQ. Open Little NavMap and on the left side under search type in the identifier of the departure airport and hit enter. Right click on the airport down below and choose "Set as flight plan departure". Repeat the procedure for the destination airport and of course choose "Set as flight plan destination". After that under the flight plan menu you can select the option to create a route using navaids, low altitude airways, high altitude airways and it creates the route for you. That should get you started, but you probably will need to read the manual and watch some videos to make things easier as you learn more.

Buckshot,
I have to pretty much agree with what others have said. Hang in there. I've only had this simulator for about a month now, and I've taken the attitude that its a long term proposition. What I mean by that is I'm learning a little more each week, and my goal is to become more proficient over a period of weeks and months.
Yes, read, and lots of Youtube videos can help you. Its all worth it when you finally make that successful landing in say, the 737 using Vor and then approach, and the glidescope takes over.
I learned the GPS system for the stock Cessna and Cirrus 50 pretty quickly, but the FMS has taken some time. I use Simbrief, Navigraph, and learned how to input a flight plan from Simbrief into the stock 737.
Little NavMap...now that's a new one for me, I'll have to check that out, you got me curious John W.

This is easy to learn--just Youtube. You have two versions to use, so type this:

1) How to use the x-plane G-430 (little one)

or

2) How tro use the x-plane G-1000 (big one)

I agree with what Rich said--this is going to take some effort to learn everything. I'm assuming you bought this sim for the same reasons others did--learning how to fly / practice flying an airplane. That's not a simple undertaking especially with an accurate sim like XP.

The good news is that once you learn GPS in this sim, you will be able to use a Garmin in a real plane--guarateed.

Try not to get frustrtated, you're learning good stuff here--it's not a game. Also, remember to have fun!

John, doesn't Pilot2ATC have this same feature? Why do you use Little NavMap for this? Just wondering if I am missing something...

Yes it does have flight planning. Guess I've just gotten so used to using Little NavMap that I never really tried using the flight planning in P2A. So, I just went through the process to figure things out and after finding out how to add waypoints and display high and low charts I created a flight plan and it was very easy. It can also import plans and export them as well.

It's very simple. When users come in here and say the game is "too simple" with nothing to do, no combat, no adventures, few training missions, etc you NOW have an answer for them.
Dive into the quantity of GPS training videos to learn how the XPLANE 1000 actually works. I guarantee that it has functionalitiy that 99.9999 percent of the users here don't even begin to use or know.

Properly setting up VNAV (only a RECENT update), flying RNAV/GPS/ILS approaches, SIDS, STARS and their selection and programming, selecting runways and approaches based on real world weather, learning actual aircraft control and aerobatics, ets will take hundreds if not thousands of very enjoyable flight hours which is why the x-plane simulator was created.

Then learn the X-Plane FMS which even in the default aircraft is quite capable of a lot. Then get one of the free detailed airliner add-ons like Zibo that take the realism and details even further. Then get a payware aircraft or two and expand your knowledge even further.

Learning to fly aircraft, how to use high end nav systems is like learning a real musical instrument, not playing Rock Band - you have to actually read manuals, watch tutorials, and PRACTICE. A LOT.

Take your time, be prepared to crash alot, get lost, restart flights, etc - and then experience IMMENSE PLEASURE as you realise that you've learned some amazing technical skils that yes actually translate to the real world if you like.

It's UNBELIEVEABLE that any person in this world with a couple thousand dollars (for hardware and software) can learn and experience milliions of dollars of aircraft in their home at a moment's notice. RELISH the incredible experience that is offered to us and very FEW other people on the planet or in history - it's an AMAZING TIME.

Let's not get too high and mighty here folks. After all,, the OP asked a civil question. He's had some nice helpful replies and I'm sure he'll get to grips with things in his own way and in his own time.

if it is too complex, then you shouldn't use flight simulators, it would defeat the purpose of the programe, simulators are not games, they are to educate you to know how to fly, plus it is already simplified, if you tried to use a real nav system on lets say a real 737-800 for example, you would look back at your simulator and see how big of a difference it really is, however to add a location, look up airport ID, i am from spokane WA and I want to fly to Los Angeles, look up Spokane international airport ID, you will see a simple four capitle letters KGEG, (K) is the country are letter, as the US, GEG is spokane international, then look up Los Angeles International Airport ID, (KLAX) then when you are in the airplane, go to your nav system concole and click and FLP button or flight plan, what ever it says, i think it might just say plan, anyway type each of those into the system one by one KGEG for departure on the left, and on the right type KLAX for arival, and you are good to go, for me flying real aircraft i have to set legs to pinpoint my flight path to properly take me to the right location and not have to go in a complete circle, and quite a few other steps, you dont have to do any of that so really, it is pretty simple enough,
