Not essential at all. I just don't need it updated every month but don't want to waste money if simbrief will revert to default after a month.
You are correct, it will stay at the last one you unlocked along with any previous ones and will always be there.
Is there a best time to upgrade airac? Like for example maybe it changes more at end/start of the year or is it completely random and doesn't matter?
I know that. But do some months contain more changes than others or is it random? Like there's always more changes in xx12 cycle or xx01 or there's no difference?
Also, I’m pretty sure airac changes are on-demand so stuff changes randomly.
Oh, I see what you mean. The Cycles are normally regular at monthly intervals but on occassion there might be an update to a particular monthly airac cycle. It doesn't happen often but can sometimes.
The AIRAC cycle is an update every 29 days... AIRAC updates include any changes to runway numbering due to magnetic drift, new or closed airfields- VOR-ADF, Jetway, Vetor routes and so on.
Due you need to update them... Yes and no, depends on how you do your flight planning. If you are using a flight planner that only reads the AIRAC file installed in XP's CustomData folder (either stock install or a one time Navigraph install) say like LittleNavMap and/or SimBrief which you can choose to either use the data from XP or updated data from Navigraph... You'll be fine.
If you are using real world flight planning tools to plan your flights you can/will run in to issues like SID's/STAR's not matching up or even not showing up because they have changed or are no longer active. Same with airfields, VOR and so on.

I was going to mention the same.
Some add-on planes also come with slightly newer Airac cycles too.
While the Navigraph downloader deals with two main types of file downloads, I find that if I merge the two folder structures, I can copy the result to any add-on, plugin or FMC and it will work.
The Navigraph downloaded doesn't seem to find all instances in the X-plane directories, so I typically copy the merged folder into those it has missed, overwriting any existing files.
So if you keep what you are using consistent on all subfolders, you don't need to purchase an Airac subscription, assuming that you are not using Simbrief or anything that requires a current cycle.
LittleNavMap will scan what you have loaded into X-plane along with all of your installed sceneries and work off that for flight planning.
