X-Plane 11 steam vs direct
Are there any disadvantages/advantages to buying X-Plane on Steam rather than direct from Laminar?

In the Steam version, can you still add in mods and other content that is purchased outside of steam?

They're identical, mod installation is the same.
Steam is cheaper(it will go on sale june 21) and more convenient.

Plus for direct: you decide, when you want to patch.
Both identical.

Direct version is easier to manage than Steam, as Steam tends to forget certain apps and if you mess the installation up, you have to correct all default files, whereas you can choose the ones you want to correct with the direct version. Also, by buying direct, all your money goes to the developers, whom definitely deserve it.

Steam is great if you don't want to have to worry about storing disks and downloading patches. BUT, on the other hand if your system has an issue with an installed update on steam you're out of luck until it gets fixed because you can't go backward to the previous version. I've had very few issues with updates on steam but have recently had an issue with one of the airports I fly into in XP11. The recent update for that airport updated the runways and deleted the instrument approaches that used to load in my GNS 530's. To fix this I had to spend $10 to get a monthly subscription to Navigraph so that I could update the navigation database. Something I don't think I should have had to do. But it is what it is. Overall I have almost all of my games through Steam and have not had any issues and in reality the issue with XP11 above was very minor and I could have ignored it. At least it got me into Navigraph and how to update the navigation database. Regarding mods, it seems they install the same way they do on the box version of XP11 and verifying game cache in XP11 doesn't affect the mods that I have installed as far as I can tell.

I purchased the Steam version of X Plane 11, and I am new to it. I see a ton of add on scenery and planes and other things improve the playability, I only downloaded one item so far and I did not do it through steam and it seemed to work. HOWEVER I am not sure that since I have the steam version, if any add on' items both freeware and paid ware, could cause any issues with the program or if I should only be downloading extras that are available on Steam for the program.
Same question for updates to the software including beta versions etc. Does it matter where I download them from or can I only update through steam?
Thanks for any help!

It doesn't matter. Addons instalation is exactly the same for steam and non-steam versions. You can download from where you want.

I just bought Molokai &Kalaupapa scenery from Laminar. My x-plane 11 is from Steam. Laminar says install it in the Custom Scenery folder but I can't find that folder.

Where you have Steam installed see below, yours should be similar
Steam\steamapps\common\X-Plane 11

Go to X-Plane in your library, right click on the library entry, left click properties, click on local files tab, then click on the browse local files box.
