I haven't used UNICOM yet, so looks like I've joined at the right time :-)
No, it’s a frequency range that allows for long distance communication like when you cross over the Atlantic. It tends to sound pretty weak but is generally understandable.
It seems like it's mostly all about these mods and stuff, nothing is included with the base game.
It really raises the experience and is extremely enjoyable.
For sure, it definitely sounds like it.
Also, I wouldn't know all of the nomenclature, lingo, and for that matter procedures pertaining to communications, ect. Honestly that's the part I'm least interested in with everything, and also dealing with people. Also I only have a payware Cessna 172 and don't want to use stock aircraft. Anyway I would most often be flying around areas where it is a later lettered airspace or whatever, and less busy. Still, VATSIM seems not casual enough for my desires at the moment. I just want to fly around in multiplayer. And from the sound of it from what I read in the past about VATSIM, they are a bit strict and will just ban anyone who just flies a pattern wrong or flies an incorrect leg distance or something. I just want to fly in multiplayer but maybe sometime I can pick this up as well and perhaps it's not as much as I think maybe.
Well if that was really the case VATSIM would be losing pilots left and right coming out of LAX.
They file the ORCKA3 departure and delete the route discontinuity (this part is vectors) and the KLIPR waypoint gets bumped to the top and they end up going directly to KLIPR. They should not be doing this yet, ATC will tell them when they can go to KLIPR.
It can cause issues if you don't fly this right because it takes the VFR coastal route into account, if flown correctly you have no chances of causing a problem provided the pilot flying the VFR coastal route is doing the VFR coastal route as it should be done. I wouldn't doubt it can also cause issues to those who have already departed and flying the departure procedure. These departures ensure a smooth flow of traffic when it's busy and when not flown right it can cause cause problems.
Not flying the ORCKA3 correctly happens quite a bit and pilots don’t get banned. They’re told what they did wrong and if needed given more information about it via a PM.
Can it be intimidating? Sure, especially if you're new but you're not going to get flat out banned for what would be a serious violation in aviation safety in reality.
People are going to make mistakes on VATSIM and because actual lives are not at stake something rather serious in reality that could make you lose your licence is more of a slap on the wrist on VATSIM and a talking to of what to do better next time.
Depends on the controllers. Some of them can get quite snotty. Can you believe even Jeff Favignano (YouTuber and real-world pilot), got a verbal pasting from a controller on Vatsim and he was only following the controllers orders who actually messed up Jeff's departure. You could tell Jeff wasn't too happy but he kept his cool.
Some pilots have even turned off their connection if a controller gets too aggressive with them. At the end of the day, it's only a game (ok, simulator), even though we want that extra realism and do our best to abide by the rules but we're not real pilots after all.
If one feels they were mistreated they can go to that regions ARTCC website and post feedback and be done with it. A YouTube can be used as evidence if need be.
The best way for one to get into VATSIM after a bit of “ground school” is to hop into something like a Cessna 152 and do simple touch and gos. The communication procedure while in the pattern isn’t difficult and will build up ones confidence. Next should be reading about ATC services and asking for flight following between low traffic airports about 20 minutes apart. On the way one can get accustom to usage of VFR charts.
A lot of new pilots want to go straight for the big boys and IFR and that is where many new pilots mess up on VATSIM. Start off in something small, simple and slow and fly under VFR. They won’t get ahead of you when it comes to workload.
VATSIM really takes the hobby of flight simulation to a whole new level and not wanting to get involved because of a few bad applies is truly sad to hear. If one feels they were abused it can be reported. Don’t let someone control your desire to want to get more out of your passion for aviation.
You're preaching to somebody who is already a long time Vatsim User. Your overly long post misses the point. I say again, there are some right snotty controllers on Vatsim if you're unlucky enough to get one who act like they're holier than thou!!
Chopped up my post above to get to the point.
I think we're misunderstanding each other, sorry. The controllers are fine if you make mistakes but you need to be willing to try.
They're worried about getting yelled at for being new. What you said was controller error and is just unrelated and can happen to anyone on VATSIM.
