You can hold the right-mouse button and move to look around. I use it all the time. Left, right, up and down to move the camera in their respective directions; A, D, R and F to pan and . and , to move backwards and forwards. Shift to go fast, Ctrl to go slow. Motion is smooth too, unlike FSX.
Not sure how Ortho4XP compares, but it's free, and you have a great amount of flexibility with it. MisterX6 airports are beastly being free. X-Plane airports aren't as detailed as P3D airports, but again - Many are FREE!
No good ATC atm aside from Vatsim/IVAO. X-Life is good, but WorldTraffic (V3.0) is better.
Weather is not depicted well at all. Best addon is XEnviro - But it's $70. In the X-Plane community, that = Expensive, and the sole reason why many choose not to buy it. We're waiting to see what ActiveSky has to bring, as well as other developers who are realising X-Plane's potential.
Hope all this helps, because X-Plane is cheap and enjoyable in the long-term!
To see what you can do with the sim, try youtube. For some good youtube content on x-plane, check out Q8pilot, Thomas Rasmussen, and Flight and Fun. Those are some of my favorites that give some real good indepth with what you can do. Freeware and Payware. Check out Twitch as well. Usually someone is always streaming x-plane 11
Another good site to check out is www.flightdeckx.com. Its a dedicated news site for Xplane with whats going on in the world of X-plane.
I was in the same boat as you. I am a FSX refugee myself. And I can honestly say I'm glad I switched. Laminar is very commited to their product as well. Do your homework and see what works for you before you spend your hard earned dollar. You have a lot of addons invested that will indeed work with P3D V4. So I can understand your decision being difficult to make. But check out x-plane forsure
Seems great so far, when i have the time i'll set everything up :)
