I suggest that you start with a clean install of the Nvidia drivers.
While the ones you have are not that old, recent Windows 10 updates foul the previously installed Nvidia drivers.
Grab a later driver, select a Custom installation, click on the "Clean install" when prompted.
Let the system reboot when done, then try again.
Haha, so here’s a fun little twist. Just reinstalled Windows... and now Steam won’t load at all - we’ve now arrived at the well known Steamui.dll crash.
Ugh.
Or did you reinstall Windows on top of your existing installation?
Did a complete wipe. Total reset.
Steam still won't boot up - same .dll error.
I really wish I could just download the game files without needing the Steam interface...
I know that it asks for elevation anyway, but if you kick it off as administrator some of the dependancies may have a better chance of installing properly.
You may also want to disable any anti-virus during installation and first launch and also check that DEP is set only for Windows services.
Interestingly enough - Steam still works on my other desktop that’s running Windows 7. Just for fun, I tried the most recent installer from the Steam website on that machine as well - got the same .dll error. Maybe there’s a problem with the current installation package from Steam?
I’m gonna ‘try’ and somehow get Steam working, or at least my game files, moved over from my desktop via my Homegroup network. Kinda my last hope at this point...
They were: 4 - Windows 7, 2 - Windows 8, 6 - Windows 10 x64.
Steam and other programs have problems with some character sets and localizations, which may account for the consistency that John is seeing.
Updated all drivers, etc, etc, etc... still a no-go...
So I contacted Steam Support - they recommended a couple of apps to check if any other files that steamui.dll needed were missing, corrupt, etc...
So I did a scan... there were TONS of entries of either missing or corrupt files.
So I did some more researching, and did some various tasks in the command prompt, and it repaired a whole shwack of broken and missing files. Restarted the computer, and Steam started up.
Now I'll dive into the other apps and see if I've had luck there as well...
Interesting that a clean, fresh install of Windows had so many file corruptions... oh well, one step forward this afternoon, so that's great news!!
