Mouse and Keyboard flight.
Hey simmers.

I just purchased Xplane 11.

How well can you fly (just basically) with a mouse and keyboard?

In the future I will be getting a Yoke and throttle quadrant with rudder peddles and Trackir 5, since I am doing flight training next year I know it will help me to have those items, plus it will be really fun and enjoyable to fly like that at home on Xplane 11.

Thanks.

You can fly pretty well with the mouse, as it controls pitch, roll and yaw simultaneously, and click to hold that position at any time. The keyboard is a must - gear, flaps, trim, other controls... It's all good for VFR flying, but less so for scareliners, which require a mixture of pressing buttons and controlling the aircraft.

Awesome to hear, yeah I will just be flying in this game with mostly GA aircraft. Won't really fly many airliners.

Thanks for the response!

Well, my experiences with mouse and keyboard are good. I recommend a yoke and rudder pedals, like how I use. Use Saitek yoke and throttle quadrant, they come in same box, and use the site rudder pedals, not the combat, they are 350-400 dollars on Amazon.

Like how I 'will use' and yoke and rudder. Didn't get them yet.

Yeah I will sometime down the line buy the Logitech/Saitek yoke and throttle quadrant. They are a tad bit expensive to me. But I think they will be worth while! Then later on I will get dedicated rudder peddles. And last but not least, track ir. But that is all awhile off at the moment. Just happy to hear this game is 100% playable with mouse and keyboard only!

I think Saitek make the best yokes and rudder pedals. My relatives also got Logitech Saitek joystick to play FSX. Don't buy anything else, except Saitek products, in my opinion. Saitek yokes also control landing gear, flaps, ATC recordings. You can also modify the controls of the yoke on the 'Joystick' or yoke calibration. Saitek also have all the panels a cockpit would have. But, but, but, that would cost 3k+ including the screws and the thing that holds the panels.

I got some cheapish joystick and Throttle of Amazon, I had never heard of the company before, but seeing as I use the sim primarily to assist my learning in the air cadets, and not flying long distances with heavy aircraft, I shouldn't need that much.

However the stick and Throttle are fantastic, with great accuracy and customisability. Sure, they aren't as good as those offered by big brands at £200+ price points, but for their relatively low price tag they are fantastic, and I have no regrets buying it.

It is worth shopping around, consider every option before you buy.

Good luck!

I recommend getting saitek products. They are the best. Really good quality and good price. 190 for yoke and throttle and 160 dollars for rudder pedals.

Don't know why you would want trackir for this type of game but power to you. Games like DCS could use trackir but you don't need it.

I'd never play DCS without Trackir lest I was in VR. It also works very well with most commercial flight sims like x11.

You don't need it though. Maybe you like it but I've never once used it. That doesn't mean I don't want it I just don't want to put the money in at th emoment to use something my hat switch does just fine.

Many things work well but it's not needed. In DCS a combat flight sim looking around quickly can be good but in X-plane or things like it why bother. The time I move my camera around th emost is while I'm at the gate starting the plane lol.

Using TrackIR would help a lot with landings. As when you are setting up for landing, you are constantly looking back to the runway to check. TrackIR would also be handy for using cockpit instruments, without needing to use the mouse so you don't take your control away from the plane.

Don't know about you but I can move my head around while keeping control of my stick.

Don't know about you but I can keep control of the aircraft while moving my head around. You've also seemed to lost the original point of my comment in the first place. It's not a real requirement to do much because it's simple to work around without it.

I just got started with flight simming after selling my track IR and warthog HOTAS 2 years ago. Honestly because this is a civilian sim i say mouse and keyboard is pretty good.

Depending on what you find fun, its very easy to fly commercial jets with k/m since most of the actual flying is done using the autopilot pretty much from your take off to you land.

Mouse for the 172 is good to. Ofcourse joystick is better but i have alot of fun just with mouse.
