Its a maybe, but you can also use your keyboard and mouse, and a Steam controller can be used as an alternative (its a keyboard & mouse in the shape of a controller), for those times when you just wanna sit on the sofa with the big Tv and fly fly fly.
Maybe in a month or two it will be fully functional.
Until its recommended, I would just use a controller if you are on the fence as to if this type of game/sim is going to be a regular play.
You may also want to spend an additional $150 ish on a TrackIR to enjoy it fully; maybe even invest in a VR setup..
And for flight game/sims such as this, there is often over $1,000 of scenery & plane add-ons.
Its all a matter of how much you are willing to put into it.
Oh! The trackIR is already in my wishlist ;) buy in 5.......4.....

I have the steam controller working in the linux version of xp10, and I use the gyroscope mapped as roll/pitch axes with max haptic feedback and its pretty awesome. Its not as authentic as a true yoke setup of course, but its extremely precise and is a decent enough emulation of a typical GA flight yoke. Adding support for this in windows would open this game and genre up to a lot more players who don't want to fork out for a HOTAS. (Plus, a joystick-style HOTAS isn't really all that realistic of a physical representation of whats in most GA planes anyway).
For this (and other reasons) I won't pick up Xplane 11 until they modernize it a bit. Some things seem stuck in the past... directinput controllers only, no landmarks, etc.
I have exactly the same setup and I've been able to have all the functions on the Hotas & Pedals I want.
What is not working for you?
Hey dude, my post was from over 4-months ago. They seem to have fixed whatever switches/mapping didn`t work 4+months ago for me when I had tried the DEMO.
All the Warthog switches etc works in Aerofly FS2, but I will likely get this sim some time or other; but I don`t like the price of Airports, which are the price of additional States/Country`s [like Switzerland] in HD on Aerofly FS2.
I've tried it, own two, and Xbox controllers too, and it's TERRIBLE for flight sims.
The Steam controller CAN provide inputs to X-plane as a MOUSE yoke... ugh! It does work this way but it is awful.... just like flying with a mouse. Even the Xbox controller works better because it functions as a sort of Joystick if you wish.... but even then ewww!
Joysticks or Flight controls are the way to go as they better approximate what you would do in a real plane.
The problem is not with the sim, but the expectation of a SIMULATOR using controllers meant for more casual style gaming. Simulators by definition are attempting to mimic reality.
Anyway the issue for me isn't 'controller/gamepad' support, but that they aren't supporting xinput, which is the modern input protocol on windows. It likely won't be too long now before you see joysticks using xinput as well, and Xplane won't be able to use them as-is
