Generally any joystick with built in yaw, and over 5 macros is good for any situation.
I use a yoke too these days - the Saitek one (paid about $160 with the throttle levers). IRL I prefer joysticks to yokes, but when simming I prefer yokes for the simple reason that they're leftie/slightly more ambidextrous. Generally joysticks are very much right handed, which is counter to most of the planes I've flown in real life, though I do enjoy the Aeroprakt Foxbat. It's an ultralight, but has a central y-stick, so you're flying right handed. Of course there are left handed joysticks out there too, and if you mostly fly airbus in game, it'll probably feel more realistic, and of course, you get a yoke, you need pedals too!
In short my recommended starter joystick - Logitech 3D pro
$100 joystick - thrust master T1600
Over $100 - Yoke/pro joystick of your choice lol
The best value? Had both Saitek and CH Yokes, liked the Saitek better in the end.
In the joystick department, I really like the VKB Cobra Defender. On a budget, I agree the Thrustmaster is good.
Get some Saitek rudder pedals, they are quite solid, or the MFD crosswind if you want something heavier.
rudder pedals are a must if you want to fly small propeller aircraft or helicopters. I guess you can get by without pedals if all you ever do is fly big airliners.
Yep, the good old yaw-twist. I've noticed from Phil's comments on other threads that he is a pilot IRL, as am I (deeply amature myself - I consider a C172 a luxury lol, Usually it's Jabiru's and Aeroprakts!) and I do agree, I mostly fly GA aircraft in game too and whilst the twist sticks are great for affordability and perfectly usable in turns/level flight, however in light aircraft with a strong crosswind on approach, peddles really do add quite a lot!
Personally, I would say that adding a trim wheel and then some peddles would be preferable upgrades to replacing a 3D Pro with even a $400 joystick. Just my opinion of course :)
