How to start a flight from mid air?
I used to play FSX quite extensively and perhaps my favorite thing to do was to fly a cat iii approach in the 744 (in fact, with the same blue United livery the 744 has in xp11). Is there a way I can get my plane where I need it, save the flight at that exact moment midair so I can load it up at any time and fly the approach?

Thanks

Yep. Adjust your aircraft to how you'd like it, and fly it where you need it. Then, click File -> Save flight, but save it as a SITUATION, NOT A REPLAY. You can, from the airport customisation menu, select either 3NM or 10NM final approach to any runway - which usually doesn't save most things like gear# flaps etc.

A situation saves most of the aircraft's so-called datarefs. However, payware aircraft with custom datarefs and certain datarefs of the default aircraft cannot be saved, so don't expect to simply 'resume' a flight.

I shouldn't have this issue with the default aircraft though, correct?

I also now see the option to start from 3/10NM, very handy! I can't seem to remember how far I used to start out, but I'm certain it was over 10nm.

I think the FMC and a few other things don't work, but the vast majority of the state of the aircraft is saved quite well.

I think there's an option when you configure a flight to start at long final (instead of e.g. ramp) of the chosen aerodrome/runway.

... Which is the point we were just discussing, I believe.

There certainly is, and that's great for a cessna, but the point of this thread was dicussing a means to save a planes configuration, including radios, for later use

I have a couple of B737-800 saved situations on the ground taxiing or just before takeoff that have worked fine so far.
Last night I saved 2 new situations during a flight so I could continue today. Both situations are unusable - mainly the AP is messed up although it seems to be different lost settings each time I reload the same situation. Even if I reactivate the AP the plane loses the flightplan and starts a slow spiral descent to the right.... This all probably corresponds to the point mentioned earlier that not all parameters are saved. I noticed a few other non-AP switches seemed to be incorrect too.

However an additional effect with these 2 inflight saves, which probably points to a different issue, is that after a short time (30s) the cockpit slowly goes darker and darker until I just have a black screen. Menus work, external views work, undocked map and FMC are fine. Has anyone seen that? Is it also a result of missing parameters? As the cockpit disappears I als hear starnge clunks and warnings.

Could be because smoke in the cockpit is triggered for both sits, or perhaps because you are blacking out with such extreme g-force effects.
