Depends on how you define multiplayer. You need to refer to the online manual and the on-screen instructions in the Network tab in settings to connect direct to other computers. If you want to fly with other people around the world, X-Plane 11 doesn't support it, mostly because the devs have got their priorities right in my opinion.

To fly with others, you'll need either Vatsim or IVAO for FORMAL flying ONLY (PROPER ATC, real weather, NO TROLLING etc.), or FSCloud for a more casual and relaxed experience, with no restrictions. Installing any of these applications for X-Plane 11 is both complicated and lengthy, but it pays to get it installed correctly.

You can also use this http://xsmart-plane.com/smartcopilot/ to fly with your friend as a copilot in the same plane

Does that work if they have payware aircraft with custom datarefs, such as the JARDesign A320? Obviously both need to have the aircraft and software.

Dont forget about PilotEdge https://www.pilotedge.net/, staffed by real life ATC controllers for a very real/professional learning environment.
