Cars with high top speed and wide axles are the best in their categories. The drivetrain doesn't really matter much, but your first car should be an AWD to help with the start of the race.
Nitrous management is extremely important. How nitrous works in the game is that it works the strongest when full; using it when it's halfway full results in a weaker effect. When exiting corners, only use half of your nitrous; once you're on a long straight, empty it. Drafting is also pretty broken in this game, but it'll help you get away from the rest of the grid. You can use your draft to get closer to the leading drivers and challenge them for first.
You should also gutter-ride as much as you can. The "gutter" is the edge between the road and outside terrain; normally going off-road makes you lose traction, but if you find a sweet spot between asphalt and dirt, you get way more turning grip. When cornering, keep the outside half of your car on the road and the inside on the grass. This lets you corner quicker than just staying on the road completely.
