Follow-up question: There are a few other "dark, mature-themed" games on Steam and even though I purchase them all I've never actually completed one. With that in mind, do you think these pants make my shirt look fat?
Thanks for your time, Sir.
Yes, no, absolutely, right, probably not, and then maybe.
Stunning so far, this is definitely an experience moreso than a game. It's more on par with atmosphere and story heavy games such as Dear Esther, the gameplay elements are somewhat basic(while still very fun and relaxing) but they serve as more of a foreground to a very vibrant and twisted world.
Even the voice acting I loved, I almost thought the main character was being played by Christopher Walken.
And yes, the game as the developer stated is much more akin to exploration and atmosphere games such as Dear Esther and Gone Home which is what convinced me to buy it. Those are two serious pieces of art, and I think this genre is perfect for people who want to relax, not have to think too hard (other than of course on plot and symbolism), and take in a really beautiful story in the same amount of time that a movie takes. I think this achieved that "movie-experience" perfectly.
Play this one at night with the lights off, when you're in a really introspective mood :D
It's a hard sell, (a stop and smell the roses platformer? No thanks! =). I still stand by the gameplay being fun (though simple), but the true focus in developing it was to create that feeling I got when playing Dear Esther. The "lost in thought" while playing a game kind of feeling.
Anyway, thanks again. Needed that!

I have a few questions before I decide to buy the game. First, I get there is a drinking machanic to the game. Does this mechanic play any real part in the gameplay (or story) or is it just something different?
Second, is there any swearing in the game?
Third, is this a horror game or have horror elements (gore, jump scares, etc.)?
"Does this mechanic play any real part in the gameplay (or story) or is it just something different?"
First off, you can play the entire game without using the drink button/mechanic. The mechanic itself gives you higher jumping and faster running, as well as impaired vision (colors pop more, and perspective goes sideways, and it will occasionally make the world around him change).
While you never have to actually take a drink in the game, the mechanic does link to the story. In that, the main character is an alcoholic who is struggling to rid the habit.
"Second, is there any swearing in the game?"
Yes, there are a few "hells". For example, the narrator says at one point, "I don't know what the hell is going on here". There may be the use of "damn" as well. I believe that's it.
"Third, is this a horror game or have horror elements (gore, jump scares, etc.)?"
Nope, neither.
As a proud parent of two little girls, I would let them play Spate at any age they want. I will say though, I'm rather lenient on that kinda stuff. =)
Thanks,

Just a quick question about Linux and Intel HD 4600 graphics. Have you tested or played the game on similar hardware? I'm really intersted and was wondering what kind of performance to expect.
If I had to make an educated guess (after looking at benchmark scores), you would be getting sub 30fps on average on the lowest settings at 1280x768. Something closer to 20fps if not less.
Like I posted on the other thread, this is the most GPU demanding 2.5d platformer EVER!
Just because of the above comment I'm buying the game, feels like you just gave me a challenge. Going to test this game on an older HD3450 and a HD7770 which is great seeing as the intel HD4600 should be close to the AMD HD7770 on performance.(I may overclock a little...;-)
Besides that, I'm enjoying the constructive comments on "Spate" so far. I liked Limbo, so this game will fit perfectly in my library.
Man, the Radeon HD3450 is far worse than the Intel HD4600. I think even the Intel HD3000 beats the 3450.
The HD7770 is much better though.
Do test the game on both GPUs if you find time and post your results. Would help others to know how the game would fare on similar GPUs. I'm thinking, to get smooth 60fps on your HD7770, you'd need to play at 720p on he lowest setting.
Either way, do share the results!
