i would love to see some adjustment to the boss difficulty in arcade mode. its too much rng because some bosses are just a run killer. for example in seasons we never beat the hydra.. allways beat the fairy.. we can beat the big fairy if we have a good run

Ah dang when I saw the headline, I was ready to jump back into the game, since "hard" almost felt exactly like normal. Then I saw that expert mode just chance a single topic ~~ I didn't even use healing potions a lot since release, since they made easier what already felt easier.

The issue I had with "hard" after release, was that I could basically ignore what all bosses did, because they died in like the first phase, with very little damage being able to reach me even if I play badly and don't block or hardly dodged, no matter which build I tried. I remember playing the game several years ago and we had to do the ice maze of the winter elder like 2-3 times and now we skipped it due to damage output and I skipped it with chars in single player too. We hunted all all cards back then too, so level and extra bonus is not what changed in our playing since then.

Basically every boss I saw had phases skipped since trying it after release... that said I never reached the endboss, because I lost interest a few times and started new characters when i tried again. I was hoping the expert mode made it so you can still try to get cards, without being so overleveled that you just skip boss mechanics from hitting random buttons on your keyboard and get hit by like 1/3 of everything. Seems the game is not balanced for card farming, even on harder difficulties. This was expected for normal, but I though in "hard" you could dig into more boni and still have some challenging fights, but hard and normal felt pretty much the exact same.

Edit: just read about /beastmode Would be nice if that was communicated anywhere in the game.

I agree. Some bosses in Arcade, like the hydras, are too difficult. Pls make it less difficult.

I am exceptionally glad that you are looking at the potion and barrier debacle from the perspective of internal consistency rather than blatant "too hard, nerf it" or "too easy, make it even harder". Internal consistency is a very important design aspect. And the changes to arena scaling, shield aftercasts, larvacid spam, even projectile hitboxes and monkey drop rate suffering, are all exactly the kind of things I've been yearning for. Very happy with these news.

You're partially right for the wrong reasons. No boss is a run killer, if you're getting soft-locked on a boss - the issue is either that of skill or of a bad build. And with the latter it's actually more often than not the actual case and there isn't even any shame whatsoever in admitting it. Arcade is VERY demanding of builds on higher catalysts, and more demanding than average even on 0 cat, and it doesn't exactly tell you what a good build is, which can be a problem. I got soft-locked in a similar way because my own build was complete garbage, and my clearing consistency skyrocketed when I learned how to properly build for Arcade. I think some kind of subtle way of teaching proper buildcrafting would benefit Arcade when it comes to new player retention, but truth be told I don't know how that could actually be implemented.

And indeed, arcade bosses are for sure not equal in their power. An encounter with Winter or Luke can cripple a low end run while an encounter with the fae duo or the captain can be a breeze-through in comparison. I'm not sure if it's intended to push the roguelite angle, but nonetheless all bosses should be doable with appropriate knowhow.

For people already on hard mode saves is there a way to get those to expert or do you have to restart?

The game is done. Mostly the only patches you'll see from here are out are bits of polish here and there, there's no publicly stated plans from the devs to add new enemies, areas or anything else. Making it easier to hunt specific enemies, bugfixes, and the upcoming NG+ mode are about what you can expect.

If you're on Hard already it should default put you into Expert Mode, counting your save as if it has always been Expert Mode.

w patch, thank you
i don't often play oldschool games like this and for me the difficulty was sometimes a bit annoying, if I replay (which I intend to at some point now that the game is 'complete'!), I will be very grateful to be able to use the easy mode, ty
